In this case, I would contact the company.

We had a cleaner break a lamp once, but it was a $10 lamp from Ikea, so we didn’t care and didn’t do anything like dock her pay.

@pinkcupcake: @Mrsbells: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I agree! She just called me to apologize and said they will send someone to fix the dent. DH and I decided to just fix it ourselves since it’s an easy fix but I was more irritated that they didn’t respond to my email for days. She apologized for the delay and wanted to make it right, so I appreciated that. Thank you for everyone’s input!

I would have expected the cleaning service to let you know they damaged something before they left. But, since they didn’t I would send them a picture and ask them if this happened while they were there. The cleaning service should be able to bring someone in to repair it. Paying you cash for something they break seems uncomfortable, but replacing and repair out of pocket sounds reasonable.

I’ve had a cleaner get something on the wall that they attempted to clean up them self and it made it worse. It wasn’t a big deal because we were getting that wall painted anyway. Going forward they were way more careful about dye transfer with the products they used.

Our cleaners broke a cheap lap, owned up to it, and offered to pay. I didn’t make them pay for it because I didn’t need to replace it. It wasn’t a big deal.

@pinkcupcake: yeah I agree. For me that would defeat the whole of having my home cleaned if dented walls would be an expected thing.

@dolphin: can you call them? I would leave s review about them if you never get through to anyone

@dolphin: if it’s a legit co, they should have insurance to cover something like this.

I don’t think hiring a cleaning person means accepting that they will damage your home.

Thanks everyone! I did email the cleaning to company to let them know what happened. I told them that I understood it was an accident but wanted to just let them know and see what their policy is. I was curious to see how they would respond but they haven’t yet (it’s been days), so I guess there’s my answer and I shouldn’t use them again. I’m just bummed because I was really hoping to find someone reliable that I can use on a regular basis. Oh well, guess I’ll keep looking!

Unfortunately I think this kinda comes with the territory, BUT I would definitely call the company and let them know that you know things happen, but you're upset that they didn't let you know and see what they say. I think the way they handle this situation should tell you whether you want to hire them again or not.

This is why we go through an actual company instead of hiring someone on the side, which we used to do. The company should pay for it. But like others mentioned the wall dent is an easy fix I probably wouldn’t bother following up over. I’d be more upset if they broke a lamp or my vacuum or something.

We've had this happen twice.

Once was over $1,000+ of damage. She owned up to it immediately and offered to pay. I spoke to a lot of people who had been having their house cleaned for a long time who just said it was part of the risks. We did not let her pay and we handled it. She wasn't part of a company though and the damages would have ended up being her cleaning our house for free for over a year.

Recently something else was broken but it was a NBD thing. She glued it back together, texted me a picture, and apologized.

Assuming your SO is handy, this will be an easy fix. We've patched many a hole in our years of parenting.

Need some advice! So I hired a new cleaning company and they sent two housecleaners over. It's the first time I've ever used them. They did a great job however after they left I noticed a huge dent on the wall. I am 100% positive this dent was not there before. I'm thinking maybe their vacuum cleaner or something hit the wall really hard. They didn't say anything about it, I noticed it right after they left. I know it's an accident and unintentional, but how would you handle it? Do cleaning services typically cover costs of damages? And also, how much do you think it would cost to have this patched up? I have no clue about home repairs!
