I always make sure to take snacks with me wherever I go. LO loves american cheese, puffs, and mum mums. And those are easy to stick in a diaper bag. When LO gets cranky, I give him these things in order of least to most enjoyable (for him). I start with the cheerios..and if he gets crankier, then mum mums (he likes to hold his own food) and then if finally he doesn't want the mum mums, american cheese is his FAVORITE. that will usually give me enough time to do what I need to do and get the H out of the store. :)

@mrbee: We were just talking about him the other day and how some of what he does could relate to child care!

When my LO is a real grumpy pants I just avoid the store. But, when it happens when we are there I just let him throw his fit in the carseat, let people stare at me like I'm evil, and just get my essentials as fast as I can so I can get out of there.

@tina: Malcolm Gladwell wrote a wonderful profile on Cesar where he talks a lot about the specifics of Cesar's calming energy:

http://gladwell.com/2006/2006_05_22_a_dog.html

The sad coda to that article though is that Cesar's wife filed for divorce in 2010. :(

@mrbee: omg that is EXACTLY what I am talking about ! calm assertive energy! I actually copied this from one of RJ's teachers at daycare. He listens to them so well!!!

@tina: Wow that's awesome!

Cesar Milan's focus on creating calm assertive energy around his dogs has been hugely helpful in a similar way:

@Rubies: we do that now at restaurants. If I feel like it's gonna be bad, I ask for take-out boxes before our food even gets to the table. Then I can just throw all the food in the boxes as Rob Sr. takes him outside and we can get home in time to feed him his normal dinner.

We BARELY eat out anymore with RJ, but the few times we've been out recently he's actually been kind of ok. Kids go through such phases.

@mrbee: I have noticed that being firm has worked a little better in the past few months. Ever since I read that article about French parents, I"ve been trying out a little more firmness (which feels more natural to me anyway... I always felt like I was kind of a mean mommy but that article made me feel better) and he will now hold our hand to walk with us about 75% of the time! It used to be ZERO! Now I just confidently say "let's hold hands and go!" and grab his hand and start walking. If I hesitate at all he sits down and whines. But usually my firmness and quickness catches him off guard and he just automatically goes with me.

I'm glad to hear it has worked wtih you at the grocery store (story)! Maybe I will try it this weekend...!!! Grocery shopping used to be fun, now it's just a race to get back to the house asap (or done before the store closes!)

I stick LO in the ergo and she's always happy as a clam. LO's a social butterfly so I don't mind taking her out with me. If she wasn't good when we went out I'd probably always leave her at home.
To answer your question.. if she started acting up while shopping, I'd buy what I needed and then take off.

I used to be terrified of the grocery story. I think Charlie picked up on that, and acted like a maniac while we were there.

I started acting more confident and more willing to just yank him out of the store for misbehavior, and since then it's been night and day!

I just suck it up and pick up what I went there for. My DD is only 6 months so she's still fairly easy to calm. I always carry snacks for my DS so that keeps him occupied for a bit. Lately, I take him to stores that have little shopping carts for kids - he loves it. But I feel like I'm always on a mad dash when running errands with any one of them. I tried grocery shopping with the both of them once. It was not a pretty sight. I also play every trip out in my head before going and plan very strategically.

My LO doesn't necessarily whine/complain but what makes it SO hard to take him out shopping is that he's NON-STOP active. Like he'll run down the aisle and grab boxes and place them in the cart, then he'll run the opposite direction and grab some greeting cards from the greeting card aisle, then run the other direction and try to grab the helium balloons that are tied to flower stand. That type of thing. It's exhausting!! And he'll sit in the cart for maybe 5-10 minutes and then wants to go down and run around again. So I always have someone with me who can watch him while I quickly dash around the store and grab the stuff that I need (usually my DH or mom).

It depends on the level of cranky. If she's inconsolable- I leave. If I can do things to distract her, I usually push through. It's rare that I have to leave though, thankfully.

@looch: Lol, my LO likes when we say "achoo" like the sneeze, so I'm constantly achooing in public to keep her happy. I always wonder what people are thinking about me... but I'm sure it's better then what they'd be thinking if I have an unhappy baby.

I just deal and get my shopping done. I don't want to have to go back later when I am already there. But I know I can't take her to a shopping mall since she doesn't sit in a stroller and I am not going to carry her for that long (not that she'll let me anyway)! But I'll take her to one store destinations like Target, Costco, grocery store, etc.

@tina: I thought I was the only one who never goes shopping with LO! Usually my hubby will do a grocery run for me, and I'll only do small trips when she can stay in the stroller and I don't have to carry too much. Today was our first attempt to have her sit in the cart... and it did not work out well.

I stopped taking RJ with me to stores when he turned about 20 months old. Just not worth the struggle! We grocery shop at night now (one of us runs out probably 2 or 3 times a week for short trips to pick up essentials) and I do a Costco run on Mondays, my day off when RJ is at school.

Do you just deal with it and struggle to buy your things or leave?

I went to Target today and Lo was such a grumpy pants. She didn't want to sit in the cart, and even when I carried her she would complain. She's pretty big, so it's not easy to carry her and push a cart at the same time! But I just sucked it up and got what I came for. Easier then sending hubby out later or going back another time. Although my arms still hurt from carrying that chunky monkey that long!
