We have 2-3 babysitters we can try to call, but we're in the process of hiring a nanny through an agency right now and one benefit of this expensive process is that they have back-up nannies you can call-in if your nanny is sick and they will provide them free the first year of your nanny contract.

No nanny, but if our sitter (in-home daycare) is sick, I have my in-laws as backup and also have another in-home daycare as back-up that takes drop-ins. Luckily I haven't had to use either much, but it is definitely nice to just have that back-up available.

Amazingly, in the 2.5+ years we've had our nanny, she's never called out sick. If she did, we are lucky that both sets of grandparents are nearby (3/4 are retired) and could help. If they all somehow happened to be busy, I would take off and stay home.

We usually call our back-up care or ask for help from a SAHM friend / my parents.

If all else fails, we stay home from work. We've been lucky to not have to miss work due to lots of daycare illnesses so I just view it as the price we pay for having a nanny.

We don't have a nanny, but are there any SAHMs that watch kids nearby that you can pay to watch your LOs for a few hours today?

This has only happened to us once or twice. My parents watch my son a couple afternoons a week, so first we check to see if they can take him. They can't really arrive earlier than 10:30 or 11 so sometimes that means I work from home and have an abbreviated day.

A few months ago, we started part time day care two mornings per week. I have never done this but I am pretty sure I could pay for extra time.

My husband's job also has a backup care service but the drop off centers have very limited slots. There is also an option for them to send someone for in-home care but I don't like the idea of a strange sitter coming to my house. (Obviously I went through that with our nanny but it was a necessary investment in my relationship with her.) So we haven't used this benefit yet. If we ever do then I think I will insist that my husband or I also work from home to keep tabs on things.

I am lucky to have flexibility with my job, within reason. There are some days (like today!) when I have to attend a meeting in-person or have an especially important client call. But I can get away with shifting / flexing a lot, and it really helps. (I also work hard and contribute a lot!)

Our nanny is out sick for the second day in a row. I haven't been able to work except nap times and I had a high school student come an hour yesterday because I had a conference call. My older one doesn't have school today either. So I won't be able to get much of anything done today.

What do you do? Have a back up nanny service or something? Luckily I have a flexible job, but I'm hourly so this means I won't get paid either. Sucks!
