I'm a pretty firm believer in "don't ask for opinions if you don't actually want them" -- which is why we'll likely just keep our LO's name a secret until he's here ;-) That being said, of course you should always be tactful, but really, a person should never say, "What do you think of this name?" if the only acceptable answer is going to be, "OMG, I love it!"

No matter what, I say I like the name. People never forget who didn't like the name they chose. I find some redeeming quality in it, "I knew a Lawson, she was so sweet!"

I guess I'd apologize for hurting her feelings, but I'd also probably say something to the effect of I didn't want to lie. This is a close family member; you should be able to be honest. It's not like you would have been nasty about it if she did use it.

If it's a close friend/family, I'm honest if they act they they're still deciding. If it is a done-deal and they've already decided, then no, I just smile and say "great!" If it was someone less close, then perhaps I would do the same. (that hasn't happened yet).

Sounds like a no win situation. I mean once a baby has the name they always seem to grow into it.

Hey... she asked! If she was really set on that name, I think she wouldn't have needed to bounce the idea to you? I know picking names is hard, so just be gentle telling her you aren't that excited by this one, but you don't have to pretend you love it if you don't!

And maybe ask her why she picked Lawson, maybe there's a story behind that name and it'll sound better to you if you know it.

You should be honest with your family and I think you weren't that harsh.. She should know that there is a risk in asking the opinions of others. Which is why we don't share name ideas with anyone!!!! 😉

I usually say I like it, but I do take context into consideration. If it's like the 5th name they've asked me, I'll say "oh, I like Doris, but I like Sophie much better!" (i.e. circle back to another name they've mentioned). That way I'm in the clear if they select Doris, but I've been honest with my preference.

In your sister's case (struggling with names), I would have said I loved it, but then continued to spit ball names.

I usually say I like it. If it was my sister or something I might be more honest. But unusually just tell people I like the name. Unless I love it then I tell them I loveeeee it!

I would apologize for hurthing her feelings and just leave it. You didn't do anything wrong at all. I like when others give me honest feedback. That being said, she is still upset so I would say something about how you're sorry if you came off rude as that was not your intention and that it's a nice name or something general that still doesn't imply that you love it when you dont.

I think Lawson is cute if it has some meaning.

I think you have to tread lightly and obviously its hard to read over text if someone is just throwing a name out there, of if its their current #1 choice.

My sister is pregnant with #3, which is her second girl. She's struggling majorly with a nae because her first girl was her dream name and nothing is "living up to it." She text me last night and she asked what I thought of the name Lawson. I told her I don't love or hate it, just meh. She was very upset with my response. I thought she wanted my honest opinion I guess not! What do you do in this situation?

(Her other daughter is extremely girlie and i think Lawson is very masculine and doesn't really fit with the other two kids names. I like it for a boy better.)
