Someone said a racist thing to me once and because of her tone I responded back with same tone and then gave her a piece of my mind and then some. Granted, this was before we had kids I would probably do the same now but leave out the and then some. :)

My grandma is so incredibly racist, she believes all black people practice voodoo magic and blames them for how my mom is. Not long ago she was going on and on about it so I went off on her!

I really admire how you handled things, Mr. bee. Bravo! I just taught an anti bullying lesson and told the kids to say "that's mean" if that is their friend because they may not even realize it. If it is a known bully, they can just ignore them and report them if they are harassing anyone. In my personal life, I usually ignore them but I really want to say something because it kills me. Once I spoke up against my future MIL's off color joke but she went off on me and it took awhile for all of us to get past it. I guess I didn't know how to correct her the right way.

I always tell them my thoughts about it. Sometimes I might be a little rude in the way I handle it, but I can't handle racism.

DH best friend is racist and it drives me bananas. He's racist, homophobic all of that. I just want to slap him in the face sometimes.

I usually don't have enough guts to stand up and say something, unfortunately. Sometimes my family makes off-color jokes that bother me, but I know they don't mean to be offensive. Most of the time I just completely ignore them and don't say anything.

I'll take the high road and correct them unless it's super rude and blatant...then I'll rudely respond. Where I live I honestly haven't heard anything...it's a pretty diverse and educated area in general.

I'm embarassed to admit that my parents, who live in a very small town in Southern Louisiana, say racist things all the time and it INFURIATES me. When I say anything to them, it turns into a heated debate, so I just wince and no longer say anything.

I am ASHAMED when they say those things in front of my husband, as he commented on it early on to me. They just sound so....ignorant. I love them, but I HATE that they are that way.

I correct them to at least be more open minded and cue them in on the racist/sexist comment they made.

I don't usually go off on them, because I don't think people learn that way, they just get defensive.
I'll usually say something along the lines of "You know, that could be perceived as a very racist/sexist comment. I'm sure you didn't mean it that way though." It just lets them know that I don't approve or agree.

If it was really blatant though, I might yell at them.

I live in central FL. I hear racist and sexist things practically every day. I rarely say anything other than something quick and sarcastic to let them know I don't agree with them. I don't need death threats so I just leave it alone most of the time and relish in the fact that they're slowly dying off and that at least my child won't be taught to hate that way.

If it was a blatant remark that was racist or sexist, I would totally go off on them. If it was a stupid and ignorant comment, I probably would have done what you did.

I was talking to someone the other day and they said something anti-Semitic. Well basically, they generalized about Jewish entrepreneurs in a way that was unflattering (and untrue).

I laughed at them and said that they must not know many Jews, because that hasn't my experience at all. And that I would introduce them to my friends so that they could have some positive experiences. I was surprised, because the person readily agreed.

It got me thinking though: should I have gone off on the person about how ignorant their comment was, and chastised them more thoroughly? Part of me wanted to, but if I had then I think the person would not have agreed to open their mind to the possibility of change.

I think if I had thought the person wasn't open to change, I would have yelled at them. But because I felt that they were, I took another path. It definitely made me think a lot though, and I'm still not totally comfortable with the path I chose.

What do you do when someone says something racist or sexist?
