@Applesandbananas: just saw in your thread that he is one, my daughters age! We are trying to teach her to be gentle. So when she hits, I hold her hand and stroke my face and say "gentle touches for mama."
She hasn't bitten me while nursing in months, but when she did I stopped the session immediately and said "ouch!" She has only bitten me a few times on my shoulder, but when she did I said "no." Sharply, and put her down. She cries, and I pick her up again after maybe 5 seconds or less. It's hard to respond well when you are in pain, i know!
As for keeping myself calm when she is melting down- that's when I use the "mantra" thing, or singing. So, if there is something I want to teach her in the moment (like no hitting) I try to do that, but when she is upset and there is nothing I can really do to help I just have to keep myself calm.
Also- getting enough sleep. I have to go to bed early or sneak in a nap, or else my fuse is short and I'm too tired to be calm!

@Silva: lol maybe a blanket statement of "be nice to mommy!" That'd make a good mantra ;)

@Applesandbananas: it's easier if you don't have to think about what you are going to say! And it can be a sort of mantra.

@Silva: I like this! My major "button" is when he inflicts pain on me. He obviously doesn't understand that he's hurting me, but when he does, if I yelp, scream, cry, whatever, it escalates the situation to full on toddler meltdown. He's been biting while nursing, biting in general, head butting, or just shrieking in my ear. Maybe something like "We have to play nice!" would be a good phrase.

@locavore_mama: Same here! There's no containing her anymore so it's nearly impossible to escape :(

Pick a phrase and repeat it calmly. For example, she always melts down while I'm cooking dinner. I just say "I know that you are hungry, but mama is cooking dinner. It will be ready soon."
Sometimes I sing, which calms me and sometimes distracts her!

I *try* to walk away. She usually runs after me and tries to hang on to my legs. Sigh.

DS has been a little more stubborn lately and I've been finding myself kind of frustrated with him at times. I've been putting him in his exersaucer and walking away for a sec, like to the kitchen for a glass of water. He usually jumps around and starts giggling when he gets the car to beep-beep, so it's a win-win, usually averts the tantrum crisis and I get a moment to take a breath and regroup lol.

What do you do?
