@abbydabbydoodlebug: Yes, that is precisely how our nephews behave. It's like - take a moment, and at least pretend you like the gift. DH's sisters will even laugh at the astounding rate their sons will open gifts; it's really quite gross.

@deerylou: Dh's cousin's daughter did the exact thing for her birthday this year. She tore through all the gifts, hardly looked at them, and most of them got literally thrown to the side. Her mom just sat there and didn't even say thank you for her and was even throwing some of the gifts to the side to make room for the others.

I was appalled and Dh and I had a conversation on the way home saying we really are going to encourage our kids to verbally say thank you for each gift they receive. I like the idea of drawing pictures to put in the thank you cards.

My daughter will be taught early on to appreciate every gift. And she'd go mad for books and art supplies, hah. I can't stand children who aren't appreciative.

I emphasize saying thank you to DS, but he's really good about saying it without being reminded. At Christmas, he'll look at the gift, see who it's from, and after opening it, look at the person with a big smile and say thank you. He's a sweet little guy. :)

I loved art and books as a kid, but our nephews aren't as fond. Their parents are quick to allow them access to video games, and iPads, so they're rarely interested in much else. I am not a huge supporter of young kids and technology (outside of the occasional, educational item), but would be more willing if they weren't such greedy grubbies. ;)

PS Good for you for being that aunt! Kids need to learn manners. And books and art supplies are awesome gifts any day imo!

We always had to verbalize in person or over the phone. There would always also be a handwritten thank you, either by my mom if we were too little, or us once we were grade school age. She'd also try to include a photo of us with the gift if it was a mailed present.

I have noticed when giving toddlers gifts the parents always direct the child to the gift-giver for a verbal thank you (if presents are opened in the same room). Really cherished gifts get a follow up text- I love those because it means I did a good job picking out a gift.

My mom used to make me call the gift-giver.

My LO isn't old enought yet but I would have him say thank you verbally to the person. This is what my parents did with me.

I'm on a roll with gift related threads today, and I've barely become a pea; don't mind me!

This question is mostly for parents of older little ones (toddler aged and up, I would imagine), but I'd love opinions/thoughts from everyone!

When your child is gifted (birthdays, holidays, or just because), how do you go about thanking the giver? Do you thank them on behalf of your child (verbally, or with a card), or do you encourage your child to thank them, independently (verbally, or with a card/picture)?

I remember, as a kid, my mom was rather strict about our manners, and we were expected to look at our gifts thoughtfully, and always say, "thank you". She also used to have us sit down and draw pictures that she would mail to relatives and friends that gifted us around holidays. I hope to do the same once our little one is old enough.

Our nephews are seriously little monsters about gifts. They rip through one gift after the next, only stopping to examine the ones that have to do with video games or technology. I used to carefully research and select their Christmas gifts, but they rarely even said "thanks" - so, last year, everyone got art supplies or books. Yes, I was *that* aunt.
