My LO used to always cry if we were stopped in the car. If we were moving she'd be fine, but the second a red light came, 'WAAAAAA!"

Now if she cries I can usually throw a toy back there to distract her. When she was younger that didn't work, and if it was a short ride I'd just keep going.

Yeah, it's so though to hear them cry. :( If it's a short ride and we're almost home I just let him cry. If it's a long ride like to my in-laws then we have to find a rest stop. Most times he'll eventually stop crying b/c he's so tired from crying. I know, sad, but sometimes there's nothing I can do.

I would cut out long trips because I couldn't stand the crying. She eventually grew out of it after a few months. And she finally liked sleeping in the car. At first, I would have my husband drive and I would sit in the back with LO to play with her. But that would almost end up in more tears b/c she would want me to get her out. Sometimes if it was just me, singing would help (Wheels on the Bus or What'll I do with my Baby-o) or holding her hand at the stoplight. She has a few dolls to keep her company and a magnetic sketch writer. But mostly she just chills out and falls asleep. You too, will get to that one day!
*This lady who works at the preschool said she was on a superlong drive once and she actually tried to nurse her crying baby, while in the carseat!
*And a friend of mine had a good suggestion the other day, she said to make a reststop at a park halfway to your destination and just let them play until they are good and tired.

Aww...that's tough! My LO used to wail as soon as we put him in the carseat and we soon realized that he hated the infant insert that was in it. Now he is full of giggles when he goes in but if he starts crying or fussing we use the pacifier...or just turn up the music! There have been a couple of times where he has cried so hard he's fallen asleep.

To be honest, the first time it happened, he got so angry and we were only 10 minutes from home- my husband and I started snickering in the front seats. Yes, there are the times when he is so inconsolable that it upsets me- this wasn't one of those times.

When he's really upset or we are far from home I'll either pull over or sit in the back while my husband drives. Most of the time putting on some loudish music usually works, but there is nothing wrong with stopping and calming them down.

With my oldest we turned the music up really really loud (Jars of Clay, who we are instead was her magic album) and she would calm down and then fall asleep. This one rarely cries in the car, but when she does, she's inconsolable, so I just try to get home as soon as I can.

I usually just wait until we get home, but usually she doesn't cry in the car thankfully. She does cry if we stop, so in line at the bank or for a coffee run I have to play kids music on XM or sing! If we are far away from home or she is crying a lot, I'll stop. I'm sorry he was crying so much!

We play "Here Comes the Sun" on repeat. That's our magic song. He's usually pretty good in the car, though, so if he really starts to flip we'll stop.

He does not like stoplights at all, so I sing at every light. Last weekend we got stuck in HORRIBLE traffic for a parade in DC and I could not get out of the car. I don't think he's ever cried so hard before. It was awful.

@Andrea: he is. All he needs is some "mama time" and then he's all smiles. It amazes me how quickly he can go from crying to smiling, I love it. And I love that I have the power to comfort and soothe him like no one else. Feels pretty amazing :)

There are two songs that I can play and he instantly stops crying. It's like being a baby whisperer. One is "Dirt Road Prayer" by Lauren Alaina and the other is Martina McBride's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." I don't know why but he's instantly soothed by them.

Half the time my baby sleeps in the car, but the other half he cries. Today we had to run some errands and since I live in a rural area, we live 25 minutes from where I grocery shop. We also had a few other places to go, on the way home my LO was crying SO HARD it was making me cry listening to him and I eventually had to take the next exit off the freeway to soothe him. We spent 20 minutes in a gas station parking lot cuddling and nursing in the backseat until he calmed down. This is atypical, normally I would just go home, because it's best to calm him when I don't have to put him back in the carseat. But it was a full day and he was crying sooo hard.

What do you do when you babe cries in the car? Do you stop to comfort them?
