@edelweiss: Agreed.

With our LO, it was just a mix of walking around, taking turns with DH, keeping the room dark, and speaking to her in slow, low tones. One night I only got her to sleep after chanting "heeeeeeyyyyy yoooooouuuuu" for 10 minutes. I felt a little crazy, but I got to sleep. :-) Do what you can, do what you need to, and just know that it will eventually pass. *hugs*

sounds like you are doing practically everything you can. doesn't hurt to try the 5 s's. it didn't work for us but i know it works for lots of others. you are doing a great job.

Yup, I agree with pps. Happiest Baby's 5 Ss were a miracle for us. We'd swaddle, lay him on his side on my leg, which I would shake back and forth. I would give him his paci (or my finger) to suck on and would play white noise on my phone (which I rested right on him). 45 seconds and he'd be asleep.

Our LO was like this in the evenings too...as others said, the witching hour! It was awful because that was right when DH got home from work, so there was a bit of time there where it was so rare for him to get to spend any non-stressful time with LO! I had tricks, many of which have already been said - the 5 S's, the vacuum, going outside, etc. But none of it worked during the witching hour, we just had to struggle through it. Occasionally I would just lay him down in his swing, and then go into our bathroom, close the door, turn on the fan, run hot water, and just sit there to breathe in the steam, have the noise blocked out, and try to chill a bit before heading back out there.

Take her outside, always seemed to calm her down.

Otherwise wearing her usually helped. Sometimes the vacuum would calm her down, but when you turned it off she would wake up.

@Mae: I remember those days all too well! I cant remember where I read this - might have been Happiest Baby on the Block - anyway - have you heard about Jello head? Its works!!

I would swaddle DS and stand in the kitchen by the exhaust fan (worked like white noise) Holding the baby with him cradle in your arm gently sway so his head slightly moves left to right - like jello - there is something about that motion that just clamed my DS right down!!

Oh my goodness, this brings back memories. My baby would start getting fussy around 4pm then scream 5pm - 11pm. Every night. DH used to put her in the carrier and dance around the living room to the music channels - that would put her to sleep (but as soon as she stopped, she would wake up screaming again).

Sounds like the witching hour to me. My daughter did this for the first two months. She would go on a crying jag for an hour or two every evening. We would hold her either upright or my husband was good with holding her stomach down on his forearm and walk around with her, sometimes she wanted to nurse and sometimes not, but I would offer it frequently. She also had gas the first 10 weeks or so and would shriek after eating, but gas drops cleared that up pretty quickly.

I wore LO in the Baby K'Tan (soft sling) all evening for weeks on end, walking circles around the living room and dining room. Sometimes near the dishwasher, dryer, or even with my iphone on the Sleep Machine app near his head. That was usually the only thing that did the trick, if nursing didn't work.

Turns out he was lactose intolerant (he only just outgrew this at 14 months) - so he had a lot of stomach pain. If you think LO's crying/screaming is outside the norm, definitely mention it to your ped. Be a little pushy if necessary. My mom said she'd never heard a baby sustain a scream like my LO, and I wish I'd pushed my first ped more for reasons other than "the witching hour," but I think I was dismissed as a first-time mom who didn't know just how much babies cry in the beginning.

Granted, for a lot of them, it is just the witching hour, and there's nothing you can do but wait it out. But it's just something to keep in mind. Hang in there mama - it's so tough.

Uh, prayed. I prayed a lot in the newborn days, and I'm an atheist.

If it's gas, you often have to bicycle a lot and hard (hard for an infant). Bouncing on the edge of the bed, swinging pretty forcefully back and forth, warm/hot baths also helped some.

DH used to take E outside. One, so I didn't have to suffer, too, but often, the fresh air and wind would soothe her and she would stop crying

We also did the Happiest Baby on the Block technique. The "jiggling" worked well

Ergo! DH wore lo in the ergo with the insert and he had to keep walking. She also liked to be straight up on his chest. He also did this thing where he was like a human swing, bringing her up to his face and then back down, up and down.

Maybe an earlier bedtime?

Also, if it's a bit chilly outside, sometimes taking your LO outside can startle them a bit and break them out of a cry... even for just 5 seconds or so. Any change in environment can do something similar...

I was going to suggest the 5 S's too. And a yoga/exercise ball was absolutely our savior. C liked being bounced pretty hard on it. I cannot tell you how many evenings (like 5-10 pm) were spent alternating me nursing her, then Dh bouncing hard on the ball, then nursing, and so on.

The 5 S's: swaddle, on stomach or side, shush, swing and suck (pacifier, bottle or nursing). If none of those worked, I would just keep bouncing, talk to them, let them exercise their lungs if all their needs were met. DS and DD had a witching hour but it started at about 2 weeks until 6 weeks. Always in the evening!
