With nanny LO, we did one warning and then the food goes away. Thank goodness it was a pretty short-lived phase, because it drove me up the wall! She only does it occasionally now (15 months), usually when she's very cranky.

@Pepper: I warn her, then if it continues, I ask her if she's all done. Most of the time she says 'all done,' or continues throwing, so I take that to mean she's not hungry anymore. It's *super* fun, isn't it?

I used to warn her once and then take the plate away. If she was playing with it, obviously she didnt want to eat it.

Mine has done it infrequently, but I end dinner after 1 warning. I didn't offer anything else that night and he didn't ask... but he ate a big breakfast the next morning and hasn't done it again (yet!!) :silly:

Just pick the food up and out it back on the plate. It is a phase, and not a in one!

@Pepper: I don't think anything tests my ability to be zen more than mealtimes with a 13 month old! I hope all this pays off for us in the future! <3

@Weagle: I'm glad you said that, because that's what I did. After saying "no no, we don't throw food" 10 times, I took his tray away and let him sit with me until he was done eating. Next time I need to ignore, too.

@hilsy85: Yes, I definitely should start offering less. Usually he eats really well, and does the throwing at the end. Tonight it was from the start!

@MoonMoon: You're right, thanks :)

@Pepper: I know it's easier said than done, but one missed meal won't make or break your baby, he will make it up with milk or the next meal, etc!

Ignore it, and then take the food away. If he whines that he's hungry, I would offer it again in a few minutes.

Also, maybe try putting only a few bits in front of him at a time?

Take the food away and let her sit there while we finish. But we're also working on sitting at the table until everyone is finished. When she was a young toddler we would just take the food away and get her out of her chair to play.

@sorrycharlie: That's what I should do from now on. He's totally doing it for my reaction! He used to do it when he was done, but I know he was hungry tonight. Apparently he was more interested in my reaction.

I just feel kind of bad because he didn't really eat dinner! I can't keep cooking more food...

At this point, it's usually a sign that the meal is over. Depending on the signals he's sending, I might pick it up and offer it to him one more time, or just calmly remove him from his chair and say ”all done!” No matter what, I don't react, or try not to!

I totally ignored it! I still do for the most part..she feeds off attention to it. Usually when she started pitching food she was done, so I would get her down - if she was still hungry after, we tried again in a little bit.

Throws everything on their tray for dinner onto the floor?

Picks up handfuls of food and stares at you... While dumping them on the ground?

This is a fun new game! /sarcasm
