Whenever I cook fish for dinner, DH takes either all of our garbage out immediately after dinner or a small grocery bag of garbage with the fish scraps because he cannot stand the smell!

IF I can stand it, I will leave old food in the fridge until right before DH takes out the garbage. But if it's rotting meat then I would just toss it right away and take it all the way outside. There's no preventing stinky garbage and you def don't want those odors in your house!

I don't have a garbage disposal since I live in NYC, but if I did have one I wouldn't use it on rotten meat because I would be afraid of clogging it and who wants to clean up that?!

@tequiero21: haha! I'm with them, toss it... if you're still concerned about smell (what a nice neighbor!), I'd sacrifice a couple of (already used) ziplock bags.

i'd just dump it in the trash. trash already smells nasty as it is. your pork chops won't make that much of a difference. lol.

edit: also, don't forget, it's pretty cold out there now. so i think it will help keep the stench down.

I'd dump it. Trash gets stinky, that's just life.

I throw it in the trash if it's close to Monday (our trash day)... if not I keep it frozen and then take out Sunday to toss...

I would double or triple bag it and stick it in the garbage. It shouldn't get too smelly in a week & it's not like you are making a habit of it!

I do what @autumnlove does! Put it in a bag and stick it in the freezer until garbage day! The hardest part is remembering that you did that and pulling it out on garbage day. :P

I would just throw it out. I used to put everything down the garbage disposal (cut up of course), but then we had an issue with the plumbing and the plumber gave me a stern tongue-lashing for doing that…so, I just toss food items now.

Usually I am very good about using up food before it goes bad - I absolutely HATE letting food expire! Alas, these pork chops have been thawed in the fridge for well over a week and the fridge does not smell that great today. *hangs head*

Besides beating myself up for wasting expensive food, what should I do with them? We live in an apartment complex so when we take our trash out it is to a shared garbage can that only gets picked up once a week. I don't want to be "Those People" who put a ton of stinky meat to rot in the garbage!

DH thinks that its a-okay to cut up meat and send it down the disposal, but isn't that bad for it? I mean, its not our disposal (we rent) but I'd rather not do something you aren't supposed to.

What do you do?! (Yes I am aware I don't know how to be a grown-up.)
