Depends on the weather. If it is too cold or too hot, we pen them up. Otherwise they go outside. One day I will be able to feel like I can leave them in the house alone... I know they can handle it. It just worries me for some reason.

We crate the younger dog but the old dog is left out. The younger dog can be left out for a little while if we are just running to the store. We probably could leave him out more but don't want to run the risk. He stats out of trouble this way & our stuff doesn't get destroyed.

If you crate start it over the weekend while you are home. Stay in the room with him for a while and slowly move further away from him. Then leave the house a little at a time till he gets use to it.

We just started letting our dog stay out of the crate while we are gone and he watches us leave from the window but after that I am almost certain he just lays on his bed the whole time. Every now and then he runs to his crate when we are leaving so we will close him in, I assume those days he just wants the extra security. I never thought I would be a person who would say this but we do take him to doggy day care once or twice a week. It wears him out and a tired dog is a well behaved dog!

@autumnlove: I bet he'd do great in there! Our big dog is way more chilled out in the crate than he is in the backyard for some reason. I've never understood why!

We have three dogs, and two of them love their crate! They are to the point now that when we grab our keys, they run and hop in. Our third dog is scared of everything in life, so I'm not surprised she hates the crate :) How old is he? Has he ever been crated before?

We have to crate our dogs. One of them has anxiety so, if she isn't crated, she pees and poos everywhere. By default, the other one gets crated. Our anxious dog also has to go into this crate b/c she has broken loose from every other crate we have ever used:

We crate trained until our pup was about 1 1/2 then my husband worked out of our house for 7 months and we stopped crating now he has free reign of the downstairs. He's pretty good, no accidents, the worst thing he'll do is chew on my couch pillows.

We have never crated our 2 dogs. They have free reign of the house but DH leaves them in bed when he leaves for work and by the time I get home (about 8 hours later) they are still in bed, haha!! Our bed is too high for them to jump on but if they are desperate, they can jump down.

We definitely crate. Adopted our dog at 2 years old so she was already crate trained when she came to us. She LOVES her crate though, and if it's left open when we're home she'll often choose to hang out in there. There was even a time when she refused to eat anywhere but in her crate!
If we let her have free reign of the house, I'm pretty sure she would just do exactly what @oliviaoblivia 's dog does haha! She already will do this if we're in another room and she wants to get 'in' the bed.

It's kind of irrational/neurotic but part of my motivation for her staying in a crate when we're away is that I worry if someone were to break into the house, that she would then have the ability to run away :( She also looks 'aggressive' and I worry that an intruder who isn't scared off by her might hurt her so that he could continue with whatever plans he had. My hope is that a burglar would see that she is contained and do what he came for but that our dog wouldn't be lost or harmed in the process.

We used to crate our dog when she was really young; now she manages her anxiety by choosing a closet to curl up in when she sees us about to leave. In our current home she lies under the laundry room sink (we put down soft blankets for her) and we give her a treat on our way out so she can associate the separation with something positive. Who knows what she does while we're gone, probably hangs out on the sofa!

Crate!

He's been crate trained since I trained him as a puppy. Now that he is much older, he's back in the crate when we aren't home (not all that frequently and not for more than a few hours at a time).

He's been having more separation anxiety since the baby, which means he tries to climb INSIDE our couch. I'm tired of sewing it back up, plus he gets into the cat boxes and food and trash, so our best answer is crate. It isn't used for punishment in our house, so he thinks it's his own personal dog cave with his toys, and he's never minded going in there.
