On the converse side of this, I actually signed myself up as a dog sitter/ host on Rover.com.... and I get paid to board people's dogs! It has really worked out! I've had 4 dogs, 2 repeats and no problems. I'm a teacher off for the sumemr so I spend a lot of time with them. I get only like $30 a night but my 2 dogs get some entertainment and we love meeting new families and dogs.

We have two dogs and two cats. The cats are self sufficient so we usually just have our neighbor stop by once a day to feed/water/play with them. For the dogs, if we're only gone for a night or two my younger brother dog sits for us. For longer trips we take them to the kennel. The woman who runs it is great, and the dogs love her. She sends us daily updates and pictures so we know how they're doing!

We have a dog and two cats. Usually, we will have pet sitters come twice a day for our cats and the dog goes to the in-laws (since they live down the road from us). There was one time that we vacationed at the same time as the in-laws, so then we had the pet sitters come 4 times a day to let the dog out and take care of the cats. 4 visits a day was actually cheaper than if we had to board the dog.

If it's one night, a girl in our neighborhood comes by and takes care of everyone and makes sure our older Lab gets his meds. Anything longer is grandparent care, where all living things get spoiled and fed whatever they want or beg for at dinner.

We can't free feed our cats, they will over eat, vomit, repeat. So we have a cat sitter come once a day, who they love, and plays with them, gives them catnip etc. They also grab our mail and water plants if we are gone for more than a weekend.

We boarded our dogs when we didn't live near family. Now we take them to my mom's. The cat we've always left and had someone come by every couple days. Last time we left for over a week, we tried taking her to my mom's too (I lived there for much of the cat's life, so it was a good familiar place for her), but she seemed just as stressed so it isn't worth how upset she gets with car rides.

I've done a little bit of everything over the years - boarding, staying with friends or family, and friends who house/dog sit. The last few trips, my MIL has house and dog sat for us. They seem to be happier when they get to stay home, and my MIL is retired, so she spends all day with them and spoils them rotten.

I've only boarded her once and she hated it. She is polite and well mannered and I trained her not to bark. Poor thing despises all the barking! I take her with me or have someone come in home. When she was younger she went to a cage free place she liked, and also stayed with friends who loved her or with family.

God, its so tough. We have two dogs, one of which is very energetic and puppy like even at 2-3 years old, and we have tried different things. We've taken them to my parents house, they already have 2 dogs and a cat, so it's a little ridiculous. Plus last time the big one got into a fight with one of their dogs! The dog was fine, but my dad somehow stuck his hand into our dog's mouth while breaking it up and got a pretty nasty bite : ( I felt so guilty! He almost had to have a surgical debridement cause he waited to go to to doc.

So this past weekend, we had our babysitter stay at our house with the dogs! For some reasons I posted about previously, I don't really want her watching our baby anymore, but I still think she's a decent person and I totally trusted her with the dogs.

Our two cats have each other and very self-sufficient. We put out lots of food and water for weekend getaways. If we're gone longer, my mom comes over every other day to check on them and make sure they have food and water. Rarely do we ask her to scoop the litter box, but if we're gone for a week or more, we ask that she does once. :)
