DH has a Ford Expedition and I drive a Pontiac G6, we are in the market for a smaller SUV/crossover in the next year or so. DH's car has the space, but has over 170,000 miles and while my car will be okay with 1 baby, we also have two small furbabies that might overcrowd the sedan.

I drive a Nissan Murano. We have one toddler, one on the way, and one dog :) I LOVE it. It gets good gas mileage, has AWD (MAJOR for me since we *normally* get lots of snow), is big but still small, easy to adjust to after driving a car, plenty of storage/area for the dog in the back, comfy, roomy. I really love my car :)

I have a Honda CRV too and I love it. It's a 2004, so I don't have experience with the newer ones, but it's super roomy and comfy and is built on the Civic chassis so it's not hard at all to maneuver, park, etc., which is what I was worried about with a bigger car. We just have a dog right now, no kiddos, but I don't think there would be any problem with fitting anything in there.

:)@Sunshine1810: :) It's awesome!
We (also) each have a Prius. Makes for affordable family vacations, and it's surprisingly roomy with an awesome roomy hatchback trunk. Love it!
Of course baby is still just a 17 week twinkle in our eyes.

@AmeliaBedelia: toyotathon is starting now so you could get a better deal. Also... wait until Dec 31st. Car dealerships are MUCH more negotiable at the end of the month because they are trying to make quotas. I didn't really need a new car, I could have stuck with the highlander so I was really aggressive. I flat out told them I wasn't buying a car unless they gave me full edmunds trade in value for my highlander and they did! Because interest rates are so much lower now I have a lower payment on my brand new venza than I did on my highlander that was used when I bought it!

@MamaMoose: I really like the Venza's! I test drove one a few weeks ago. I'm not a huge fan of the price and they totally low-balled me on my trade, so I wasn't convinced. It's still a contender though. It drove a lot like my car (Toyota Solara.)

@artbee: They aren't big, but they aren't small either...I guess. One of them is about 55-60 lbs and the other is about 35 lbs. They travel pretty well right now, they just sit in their seats and/or stick their heads out the cracked window. Not exactly sure how that'd work with a baby...would have to get them used to SHARING a window. Lol.

@mekarual: That's what I was thinking - how miserable it would be to have a carseat in my two-door! It's plenty miserable just trying to get my siblings or friends in and out of the backseat. :/ So awkward.

I drive a Prius, which I think will be fine for us in the beginning. There is some nice cargo space. DH drives a Kia Forte. We have talked about upgrading his car to the larger Prius that just came out, at some point. We aren't there yet though.

1 Child and 4 dogs.
DH has a Jeep Compass. Perfect size and we LOVE it! Not too big but has enough room to get what we need done.
I recently traded in my Acura MDX which was VERY roomy and will miss my 3rd row seating. I LOOOOOVED that car so stinking much. Had the Touring edition so it had EVERYTHING!
I got a Honda Insight. MUCH smaller. But with the hatchback I can still fit a decent amount in. I transport dogs all the time in it with working in Rescue, so I can still do what I need to do and because I drive so stinking much the hybrid is def nice.

Ugh. I have a 2-door Chevy Monte Carlo, and I HATE it. It's such a pain in the rear to get the carseat in and out of the back seat. After we get our tax return, I get a new car and I can't wait!

We will be looking at midsize SUVs and minivans. I was initially against a minivan, but after thinking about it I'm open to the idea. It would be so convenient, and with a child and two big dogs (greyhounds), it would actually fit our whole family. And have room to expand, if we decide to have another baby in the future.

SO and I just bought a 2008 Mercury Mariner for our "family" vehicle and I LOVE it. It is like a miniature SUV, gets great gas mileage for its size, and has some really nice interior features (sunroof, leather seats, etc.)

We have a BMW X5. We just got it as we have been driving a BMW 335i, which is a 2 door sports-ish car - with no middle back seat (that has been the bain of my existance for the past 2 years!). We chose the X5 over the 5 series sedan because of trunk space. The X5 has 23 cubic feet of space (with all seats up), vs the 5 series which only has 14 cubic feet of space. Our old car only had 12 cubic feet of space.

I have a Toyota 4Runner SUV (full size SUV with 3rd row seating, but they are jump seats, not a full extra row of seats). I LOVE it!!! I don’t think I’ll ever go back to another SUV type, but am hoping they come out with a hybrid version soon. Its roomy and very safe. We live in New England and it handles snow like a champ, and could tow things if we ever had that need. Its also very comfortable and easy to drive, even for short people.

My husband currently has a sporty, 2-door Mercedes coupe (I’m not sure of the model). He’s planning on trading it in for something 4-door once baby comes as it isn't really car-seat friendsly; likely either a bigger Mercedes, an Audi, or maybe the Toyota Corolla hybrid. We would ideally like his car to be AWD, so leaning more towards the Audi/Mercedes.

We don't have any children yet, but we plan on me keeping my car that I have no until we do, it's perfect for us with 1 maybe up to 2 kids. I drive a Chevy Impala. It's huge, lots of leg room, enormous trunk, but it gets pretty bad gas mileage. My husband drives a coupe, so the next car we are going to get is probably a crossover. something like the Pacifica.

we both have a Toyota Yaris! DH has the 4-door sedan and I have the 2-door hatchback. We live in the city and couldn't really do a stroller (like a jogger or a travel system), just too big for our apartment & vehicles (and probably the sidewalks, too, haha). We just have a frame stroller and a carseat. Hoping baby is just as cool with our compact lifestyle as we are! :)

We have two Hondas - I drive a 4 door Civic and DH has a Fit. We are sticking with those for the time being. I think they'll be fine size-wise, my only concern is what to do if we want to take baby and dog somewhere together, but I think we'll do like @artbee and put the dog shotgun in those cases. We don't travel with the dog, so it will only be if we go someplace local like a park or are dropping the dog off at a kennel before heading out of town.

By the time we are ready for kid number 2, one or both of our cars will be near the end of their useful life...at that point we will probably get a bigger car for me...either station wagon or small SUV. DH wants a smaller car for himself with great gas mileage for his commute.

I drive a Honda Accord v6 with 1 child, no pets. I don't think people know how roomy Accords are inside, you'd be surprised! My husband is 6'3" and can have the seat pushed way back and there is still room for a passenger to sit in back of him. It also has a large trunk. I can put a stroller in it with a ton of room leftover.

The DH drives a Mercedes M-class SUV and the interior is no bigger than my Accord. It is just the trunk space that is bigger so is useful for things like Ikea and Home Depot where you buy much larger items. Otherwise, my trunk has plenty of space day to day.

If we add another child, either car would still work.

@AmeliaBedelia: I'm sure some cars have more trunk space then others, but that's something you probably want to pay attention to. We can't have shopping bags or anything in it, let alone suitcases for 3 people when we travel. It's very squished!

I don't mind riding in back, I can keep the baby entertained and calm. Where are you planning to put your dogs, are they big? Hope they're better behaved than mine!

@AmeliaBedelia: I have a Toyota Venza and I love it. My previous two cars were Highlanders. We are big Toyota people. I find my Venza handles more like a car, has a smoother ride than my highlander, and gets better gas mileage. It's almost more like a wagon than an SUV. But it still has plenty of room for lots of stuff and my pup : )
