We typically go to my in-laws for Christmas and they do a heavy appetizer dinner. It's things like chips/dip, meatballs, and other finger foods.

Christmas Eve with the ILs is an appetizer heavy bonanza. They go full Guinea with cured meats, cheeses, lasagna, seafood like jumbo shrimp and bakala (sp?), fried smelts, prime rib, antipasto, pizza bread, and then an obscene dessert table. My family used to do a Christmas ham and pecan pie.

Eating Mexican food on Christmas Eve is pretty traditional around here, not sure why! We'll have tamales and enchilada's at my MIL's before heading to church.

We usually have a heavy appetizer meal. We used to do that plus a main course and dessert, but would often skip them because it was too much and eat the rest the next day!

Last year we started the tradition of Indian takeout mmmm. We ate it in the car and then drove the lights display on the way to family ham dinner. We are vegetarian so we ate first! :silly: I hope to do something similar this year. I'd like to skip family ham dinner altogether but it is kind of an obligation to attend...

Growing up with the Italian Xmas Eve with all the fish - but now we keep things simpler. We're at my SIL's this year and she's doing a roast but when it's just us, we usually go out to a diner then drive around to look at the lights.

I'm reluctantly hosting dinner for the ILs at our house on Christmas Eve and I'm doing a honey-baked ham, scalloped potatoes, roasted carrots and green beans, and dinner rolls. I used to like it when my family would do what a lot of PPs mentioned and have a ton of different appetizers though! Shrimp cocktail, cheese and crackers, chips/bread and dips, cocktail meatballs or the little hot dogs, etc.

It'll be my parents and my family (DH and DS1 and 2) and we'll start with a charcuterie plate after church while making the rest of the meal. For dinner we are having beef tenderloin, brussel sprouts with bacon, and 2 kinds of stuffing. Basically we're having a stuffing off to see who's is the best. And really not sure my boys will eat any of that so we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. :)
