I am no authority, but I've learned a lot over the past few years! I think the biggest misconception is where to put which seat when you've got more than one kid and can't put them both in the middle!

I know that the safest seat is the one that installs securely in your vehicle and fits your child correctly! And yeah, you shouldn't use the seatbelt and latch together and neither is safer than the other.

@Weagle: I'm the same way! I read on a carseat blog today that when using the LATCH on the Combi rf you're not supposed to use the tether.... You better believe I was pulling out the manual to make sure I didn't do it wrong! lol

@Mrs. Pen: That is SO cool! I wonder if we have anything like that.... I know we should! (everyone should have access to that).

@FarmWifeGina: I'd really like to upgrade too, but we have just about a year to pay off our current vehicle so we gotta wait. =/

@mrsjazz: That makes sense!

I don't know a lot about carseat safety. We don't drive and I can count on both hands how many times LO has been in cars. We know how to put her seat in with the seat belt and that she needs to be rear facing, but that's about it.

I think I would know more about it if we drove more.

@Mrs. Pen: it almost feels like it could tip up towards the seat without the belt anchoring it down, but without the LATCH it slides all over the place. (Britax Marathon 70 G3). I'll go for just the LATCH over belt, choosing one.

@runsyellowlites: @Weagle: thanks! I'll unclip the belt. It felt more secured but stress factor makes sense. it's been that way for 6 months, yikes

@Smurfette: the manual for my 2012 car says LATCH can only be used for the side seats.

We took a carseat safety class (free) through our county and they helped install J's seat! It was pretty cool. Like Rachiecakes - I didn't know you couldn't use both seatbelt and latch - seems it might be safer. I hadn't ever done that though.

@FarmWifeGina: I've never heard that about the weight... I was going to say I did the latch system with my nanny kids all the time! but I was thinking even 6-8 year olds are generally less than 65 lbs (my 8 year old sister is definitely less than 50 lbs).

@runsyellowlites: I learned that you can't use the latch with the middle seat when we did it that way and took our seat to get inspected. The firemen recommend the latch just has to be on a side seat.

@rachiecakes: I think you're only supposed to use one or the other because the frames aren't designed to take that much stress in a crash. Or rather, stress in both places (latch and seatbelt)
