@AmandaB8: My biggest requirement was to see it in person!

Does the strap sit well on your shoulder when it is heavy/full.

Does a wipe/diapers fit in the pockets.

Is it easy to clean?

I have found out whatever works for you as a normal purse... you should just get the diaper bag version of that.

I like hobos and bowler bags for my normal purse and I found out that those are the type of diaper bags that really work for me too. :)

I did not buy a real diaper bag. I used either a backpack or a tote, both of which I already owned, depending on if I was baby wearing or not. Diaper bags just seem so bulky to me and I tried to take the bare minimum most of the time.

I have 2 now and 1 that I returned. I like both of the ones I have now for different reasons and occasions. Importance to me: looks nice, surface could be wiped clean, large pockets, large capacity, and a zippered closure. I tend to fill my bags to the brim! The one I returned didn't have any sort of closure on the top (just a tote style) and it drove me nuts. We don't use bottles, so that hasn't been an issue yet. But I love both bags' changing pads. Nicely padded, and easily cleaned.

I should add my brother and sister both used a plain old regular non-diaper bag backpack for years with great happiness. I was a diva and wanted a cute one and got a Petunia Pickle Bottom. It IS cute..... but the straps aren't as comfy.

I second @scg00387, I do a lot of babywearing (and just need my hands and hips more free with twins) and I've had the most success with backpacks.

Size, durability, waterproof and a good pocket for a bottle or two. Even if you don't bottle feed in the beginning if you want to use the bag when they're a toddler, the bottle pocket is essential.

mine isn't a real diaper bag (just a normal handbag). I never worried about the diaper bag specific things (roll out change table cover, insulated pockets (because I never carry milk around)) but my criteria was:

able to be worn cross body with a long strap, or just on one shoulder like a normal handbag

at least 3 different sections in the main body (mine has one zip pocket dividing the inside, giving me 3!)

lightweight

lots of little pockets on the outside (mine has 3 on the front and one on each side)

light, neutral colour

wipeable material.

I've actually seen 3 other mamas around at church recently using the exact same bag as their diaper bag so I guess I chose good! :D

Mine was made by a friend, but my favorite features are that it has 4 or 5 pockets on the outside and probably another 6 around the sides on the inside, including a big one that I keep my stuff (wallet, keys, phone) in. It also has lots of space for a changing pad and all the bigger things even with all the pockets full. It has a magnet closure that I appreciate. I wouldn't want to have to open a zipper to get something out when I'm holding a baby in the other hand.

hi! I agree, lightweight is very important. I have two diaper bags, the danzo "retro" and the Skip Hop "duo". The danzo is heavy in general and i shy away from carrying it, though it's bigger and has more room. The skip hop is my go - to now because its just so much lighter than the danzo.
another thing i personally like in a diaper bag is the ease of reach for the "mommy" pocket where i store my wallet and cell phone.

Lightweight is important, lots of pockets, pockets specifically for bottles, and an added plus would be straps that hook onto the stroller handle. I bought a fairly expensive diaper bag before LO was born and still use it but I bought the Skip Hop Versa after LO arrived, and it's my favorite. Personally, I think Skip Hop makes great diaper bags but I know a lot of bees like Danzo as well.

Size, can be worn cross body (adjustable strap), well made, washable fabric (or vinyl that can be easily wiped). I've had mine for almost 15 months now and very happy with it. I like how mine has two big pockets in the front which are for bottles, but I use instead for my wallet (I have a thin, flatter style that can also be used as a clutch) and keys. Also has a separate small pocket on the outside front for my iPhone. This is the bag but I have a different print they discontinued. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7XUVS0/ref=twister_B0041RRZ1U?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It also doesn't fall over when you place it on the floor. In the early months I wish it was a little more roomy inside but we would just take along another smaller Vera Bradley bag for longer day trips.

I haven't really used mine that much, but one thing I looked for was light weight. Some bags are heavy empty and I knew I'd be putting a lot of stuff into it.

I have the skip hop studio bag and am happy.

Versatility, size, # of pockets/location of pockets, ability to be worn as a cross body bag, cute factor, well made, is the interior going to get messy or will it be easy to keep organized. I ended up buying a new diaper bag when LO was a month old because our first one was just not what I needed/wanted.

I'm in the process of registering - and I have NO idea what to look for in a diaper bag!

How many pockets suit you best? What style do you like? Is there something I should avoid/look for?

There's just too many options!
