Thanks, everyone. Your replies are helpful.

@birdofafeather: DS has his one year apptin two weeks. Definitely will discuss this with his pedi.

@mrs.twine: I don't think DS has any of the issues you mentioned. We just keep offering him a variety of foods, hopefully he'll catch on soon. He's a big boy: 90-95th percentile for height and weight, so he's not wanting for calories. He does better with carbs (crackers, bread, etc.) Than anything else. Thanks for your support!

@edelweiss: It sounds like we're doing the same thing. I agree; at this point solids are more for practice eating than anything else.

My LO stopped doing purees at like 9-10 months, she was all about "big people" food. She eats a protein, fruit/veggie, and starch at just about every meal. Normally we give her small portions of what we are eating and a lot of time have to tell her "she's done" because she will eat and eat until we stop.

I wonder about this a lot too as she feeds herself often so tons of good goes on the floor! Meals to me are offered 3 times a day but sometimes she doesn't have much, maybe a couple bites of oatmeal and then sometimes several ounces!

I'm definitely going to chat with my ped about it!

I think how much puree you give your LO depends on their age. I think you can find a guide on babycenter.com that tells you. I used to follow that and also did my own thing b/c every baby is different so there's definitely an adjustment to be made for every baby's food intake. With my oldest, I wasn't very good about finger foods to start; but with my youngest he was eating finger foods a lot earlier than his big brother. And he's a better eater overall at this age (21-months) than his big brother was at this age. I remember doing this though with both of my boys when they were done with purees but you can always replace purees with the three meals a day:

Nurse

Breakfast: yo yo baby yogurt with fruit or mini pancakes/waffles with fruit

Mid-morning (depending on what time he ate breakfast but sometimes we skipped this): some puffs or freeze dried fruits

Lunch: I always gave some kind of protein (egg, tofu, chicken), veggie (carrots, peas, or other cut up veggies that's easy to eat), and a grain (rice or pasta).

Nap time: Nurse

Afternoon snack: more puffs (both of my boys LOVED this) and also fruit depending on what I have on hand

Dinner: Again, a protein, veggie, and grain similar to lunch

Bed time: Nurse

After I stopped nursing I would just replace with bottles and eventually I gave milk with their meals. With my oldest, I had to hold off milk withe meals until towards the end of his meals b/c he would drink his milk in the beginning and be full. Now that he's 4.5 it doesn't matter b/c his appetite has grown and he can eat a lot now even after finishing off his milk.

Hope that helps!

i have similar thoughts--my 11.5 month old LO sits for 3 "meals" each day and an afternoon snack, but i really question how much he actually eats! a lot of it gets tossed around and/or the dogs eat it. i feel like he needs to have more practice eating (as in, actually chewing and swallowing the food) before i can think about weaning.

for example, this morning i gave him about a tablespoon of scrambled eggs, two thin slices of pear, and a little bit of pancake (about the size of 2 quarters). he does really well with soft fruit, and he likes the flavor of the other foods (because he keeps putting them in his mouth), but he usually ends up spitting stuff out. so he swallowed the pears, but i'm not sure much else got eaten.

daycare tells me that he eats "a lot", but who knows.

D is 11.5 months. His "meals" look like this:

6:30am - nurse
9am - 3oz yogurt, 1/2 banana, 6oz bottle
12pm - 3oz puree, 6oz bottle
4pm - 3oz puree, 6oz bottle
6pm - dinner (usually 3-4oz puree, some finger foods)
7:30pm - nurse to sleep

That is during the week when he's at daycare. When he's at home, we condense the 12pm and 4pm solids to one meal at lunchtime and he gets 3oz and finger foods. He definitely prefers sweeter things, so even when we're giving him veggies, it has to be veggies pureed with fruit or sweeter stuff. Finger foods have to soft but not mushy. He loves cheese. And he LOVES pasta - he's tried pasta with marinara, lasagna, and eggplant parm. Weirdly, one of his favorites is pasta with hummus - he can't get enough of it!

ETA: Even with all that, he goes through phases where he likes ONLY purees or ONLY finger foods or absolutely nothing at all. I think it's all pretty normal behavior for his age, though!

When Lorelei was a year old, a meal for her was typicall about 1/3 of my meal assuming a standard serving size of about 1 cup. Sometimes she ate way less at a meal, maybe a few bites, and sometimes she would inhale an adult-sized portion.

I think it's really normal at a year to still be not that interested in solids. Have you noticed anything particular? Like Ellie didn't like solids much, but seemed especially turned-off by things that were slimy or squishy. She hated all fresh fruit, but would eat some fruit purees. She preferred carbs and veggies. It might be worth bringing up to the pediatrician, but assuming that he doesn't have any marked sensory issues or mechanical challenges, just keep on following his lead by offering food, and enjoy the ride! :)

This differed by age. At that point by "meal" I mostly meant how many times she ate. But generally I offered by that age a protein, vegetable and fruit at every meal. She's almost 20m and I still do the same.

M is almost 15 months. She didn't really start depending on solids for meals until we switched her from bottles to cups of milk at 12 months. Now she doesn't drink very much milk and she eats a lot more food.

Breakfast for her is 2 scrambled eggs and some fruit, or 1/2 a cup of yogurt and a pancake and some fruit.

Lunch might be a PB sandwich, a cheese stick and some grapes.

Dinner last night was a bunch of chicken (half a breast?), half a sweet potato and some green beans.

I feel like she eats a ton! My grocery bills have definitely gone up. Your LO will take more when he needs it.

So DS will be one next week (gasp!). And he still has little to no interest in purees or solids. We give him bits of food and he will play with it in his mouth, but I'm not sure how much if any goes down. Anyway, I see people posting about their babies eating 2-3 meals a day. What do you mean by meals? How much does you LO actually consume at meals? A few bites of oatmeal; a whole bow, etc? Thanks!
