@babynumber1: Tell me about it. I'm considering moving to Greensboro now. :)

We live about 30 minutes from work (on a good day) but it's all highway. The other one is still 15 minutes from work so, either way we have to have her in the car for a while. Dropped her off this morning and realized it takes quite a while to get to her daycare from the highway and v/v. This new one is looking better and better because of that, too. It's a lot of money but we figure we can put off saving for the car for a year and then see how things look when she's a little older.

We're just outside of Philadelphia. The prices of the places we looked at ranged from $900-1180 a month. It just so happened that the one that is $900/month was our favorite, but they are also the only one who doesn't take a deposit to hold your spot. So we have to wait until 1 month before baby is due to call and hope that they still have room for him. Otherwise, our 2nd choice is $1040/month.

i would pay the $300 more if you can swing it. our daycare is $400 more than most daycares around us, but it's also the closest which has been so important. we walk to school, and it's easy to pick them up when they're sick, easy to drop something off when you forget something. it was also our favorite daycare anyway!

we pay $2200/month in brooklyn.

Infant care for 9+ hours per day is $1,550/month and toddler care for 9+ hours per day is $1,480/month. We are using a Bright Horizons daycare as well. The price includes two snacks, milk, and a hot lunch every day once they are on table foods plus Gymboree twice a month.

@mediagirl: Good Lord! That is a huge difference. I am in Greensboro and we are half that. I didn't realize RTP was so pricey. Good luck finding something. Do you have a long commute? Our LO is in the daycare close to our house because she cries a lot when the car stops at lights or traffic. You might want to consider how your LO will be during your commute also. Good luck!

@babynumber1: I'm in the Triangle. The centers out by my work in Research Triangle Park (in between Raleigh and Durham) are in the $1300-$1800 range. $1000/mo was the lowest we could find.

We paid for Bright Horizons infant care in Manhattan 4 years ago @ $2400/month (5 days, 8 hours a day)... I'm sure that particular location had raised its prices since then. When LO was older and went to another preschool in the Upper West Side, we paid around $1800/month (5 days/8 hours a day). She now goes to Pre-K in Los Angeles at $1200/month (5 days/6 hours a day).

We have the best situation possible. We pay $40 a day for our LO to be in our babysitter's home. She doesn't take on any other kids and only has our LO and her 4 year old at home with her. It's pretty much perfect. I know she raises great kids because I taught her two oldest kids and they are amazing. They live just across the street from us and we love it.

It varies here, but our budget can support about $600-$800/month. The most expensive one we've found is $995/month with a lot of biannual fees tacked on (we won't be going there).

@prettylizy: we are in a home based daycare and we LOVE it.

our childcare provider charges $20 for a half day (up to 5 hours) and $40 for a full day (up to 10 hours). she feeds them breakfast, lunch and dinner (if the kids are there past 5) and she makes home-cooked, healthy meals. lil' CB loves salad thanks to her! last year, when i worked full time, we were paying just under $800 a month (my husband watched Lil' CB some mornings) and now that i'm half-time, we're paying about $350. we are in the DC area and she is considered very, VERY affordable. we are amazed at the care we get for that price!

Lil' CB will start preschool in a week, and we're going to miss her terribly!

Well, we're in BK and we pay our nanny $2400 a month. The daycare centers we've looked at are anywhere from $1400 to $2000. In December we need to decide if we are going to keep our nanny or put LO in daycare.

@filly: Agreed, the range is going to vary based on location.

i think the prices will vary based on where we all live, no?

we haven't looked into many daycare's as we're having twins and we think for the first year it will be more $$ effective if we have an in home nanny. the daycare's we looked into were quite high for two infants, and that was with a discount :(
