We just got back from vacation yesterday. I had:

A Melissa and Doug activity book for my older LO.
A ziplock full of small markers.
Sheets torn out from a coloring book and blank sheets of paper (this was the most successful).
Sticker books for each kid.
Water Wow, but I think we lost the brush along the way, so I'll have to get a new one.
iPad videos.

@LuLu Mom: my 3.5 yo DD loves those same three things! In fact I just found some paw patrol magic color books and some new water wow books at the dollar store. We have a trip down to my parents at the end of the month so I'm stocking up. We also do audio books, but we now have a 3 week old who screams in the car so not sure how those will work 😋

Crayons/coloring books (I hate markers because of the caps)
Cookie sheet/magnetic letters
M & d peel and reusable sticker books
Puffy stickers m & d (different than above)
Magna doodle
I pack them each a lunch and snacks in a tackle box type container
I spy books

We just went on a 7 hour road trip and this kept them amused the whole time there and back. In between napping for a little bit and one movie (jungle book--which was only about 100 minutes!)

Ha! I agree, I always need to bring stuff for my son to do while on vacation!

On our most recent trip (age 5):
Kite
Rory's story cubes
Math Dice
Minecraft folding paper activity
bag with stickers, paper, some markers, postcards
A stacking activity, not a hit

we just got back from a road trip, and our activity bag for our 3 year old SAVED our trip. I found a couple things that kept her entertained for hours.

1. Melissa & Doug Water Wows (letters and princess one)
2. Melissa & Doug Magic Color book (markers only mark on book)
3. Face stickers - my mom found this, it's a bunch of blank faces and than you choose the eyes, lips, jewelry, ect. SHE LOVES it.

I also bought Zootopia and we played that for her on our car entertainment center. But we didn't want her just watching movie after movie, so other activities were necessary!
