@spaniellove: I only regret NOT registering for A&A swaddle blankets. We started with one and quickly realized we needed more! I think having six from day one would have been awesome. We also didn't think we needed a swing until around 3 months (I think) when DH ran out and urgently bought one! Registering for one would have been nice, not so someone could have bought it for us, but so we could have used the completion discount when we bought it ourselves.

The only actual registery items that were not useful were plain white onesies (for some reason I registered for a million in every size), and the baby bath towels (so crappy).

We received about a million bibs, and a million receiving blankets. I originally thought neither were useful, but now at the 11 month mark I'm eating my words. With LO eating solids like crazy having 32 bibs keeps laundry under control! And we actually found the receiving blankets useful in a couple different ways - like lining out changing pad, so we don't have to remove and wash the actual cover as often! Those are things people will buy even if you don't register for them.

ETA: we also never had a jumperoo. And keeping things in the original packaging is a great idea.

A crib... LO has never slept in it and he's a year old. We used the rnp and then bed-shared. Our pack n play has never been used either. Or our rocking chair. He didn't take a paci either. But you don't know what your baby (or parenting choices) will be like until LO arrives.

I was adamant that LO would sleep in a crib in his room from day one. Womp womp.

A cradle and mattress were the biggest waste. My sister insisted we needed it and because of that my mom insisted she buy it. DS hated it and only slept in the p&p which was what we originally planned to use. You can definitely also wait on things like the high chair or jumperoo or anything that you can buy used for considerably cheaper.

I probably shouldn't have put a high chair on our registry. We got it and love it, but LO is 7 months old and we've just started using it. We could have used other things at the time.

Pacifiers are another thing - she won't take one. But we didn't know that, and have 10-12 pacifiers in different styles.

We SHOULD have bought/registered for more swaddle blankets.

Pacifiers, sippy cups, and a "fancy" pack n play. LO pretty much wanted nothing to do with pacifiers once he turned 1-2 months. We also registered for (and received) quite a few sippy cups and all of them were huge fails for our LO. We ended up using the Take & Toss sippy cups, which were the ONLY ones LO would drink from for months. The "fancy" pack n play with all the bells and whistles was also a huge waste for us. We never used any of the extra attachments (they just sit in our basement collecting dust); we just needed the pack n play itself.

newborn mittens - so useless. the onesies with the foldover cuff were much better. bottles were also useless for me because LO hated all bottles. i could have lived without the ergo carrier...i have back problems and they exacerbated them. i have way too many aden & anais swaddle blankets. i could have just had 4 and been totally fine. side snap shirts - i ordered way too many of these and i hated them because they'd ride up and expose LO's belly and it was winter. stroller/car seat arch toys were not useful either.

Swaddle wraps and receiving blankets - when LO was newborn she needed to be in swaddle sacks that she couldn't break out of so swaddle wraps were useless. One or two muslin wraps are useful for draping over the stroller or carrier for sun protection but I ended up with at least a dozen.

If you can, I would suggest borrowing a swing and/or bouncer before buying to see which your LO likes. We got a swing and she haaaaated it. Fortunately it was $30 second hand, so no big deal, but I would have been annoyed if I'd got an expensive one!

I also used the pretty change pad cover exactly twice before I realized that having a fabric cover is just asking for poopy grossness and extra laundry and switched to using the bare plastic pad and putting a cloth diaper underneath if it was cold.

@raintreebee: I would agree, the pump was the only thing we left in the box but in that time of pain I wish we weren't struggling to read instructions and sterilize parts.

I regret buying our Mamaroo and Mai Tei, although I suppose there is still hope for both.

I will also disagree somewhat with the idea of keeping everything in the box until you use it. I found it very stressful to be figuring out how to work things, washing stuff, etc, while dealing with a newborn. In fact, the task I most regret that I left unfinished was figuring out my gear. I literally had the stroller bassinet on backwards while going to the doctor since I couldn't figure out how to take it off. Lol. Breast pump was daunting, and I needed it right away. I could go on and on. All of these tasks seem insurmountable after having a baby. So maybe get familiar with and set up the stuff you know you are going to use.

I did a lot of research before I made our registry, so we haven't found that we regret anything yet. We tried to keep big stuff to a minimum since we have a small house. At risk of sounding ungrateful, the stuff that sat around unused was mostly stuff that we didn't register for. We got about a million blankets, hard-to-put-on outfits in tiny sizes, and stuffed animals! I purposefully didn't register for a lot of toys or things like the jumperoo because I wanted to see if we could get through those months without them. So far, so good! But if you have the space, some of those things can make life alot easier. For example, we did end up getting a swing, and that has been a life saver. :)

I overbought in all categories because I just didn't know what I was doing!

For example, I had a complete travel system, but ended up needing a different stroller because we walked so much and the one we bought wasn't very practical on public transportation.

If I could do it all over again, I would have done it differently, that's tof sure!

Not a registry gift - but I totally panicked on day 2 at home and bought a swing. She never slept in it, if anything it stimulated her into staying awake, so it basically became an expensive place to put her when I needed to get dressed while on maternity leave.

Hands down, the Moby. My son hated it and we used it maybe 2 or 3x -- biggest waste of money, ever! But again, that's one of those things you don't know until you try.

Also, we were given a lot of onesies and we didn't need as many as we received. I agree with others on waiting to buy the big things until you seem to have a need or just relying on hand me downs if possible. Our swing, bouncer, and exersaucers are all older versions but they are still safe and effective and we didn't have to pay a cent for them so if he'd not liked them it wouldn't have been a big deal. :)

It really depends on the kid. While a lot of people/babies didn't like the swaddles, my kids lived for them!

I think the biggest stuff is the stuff to wait on. I didn't use the jumperoo at all because my lo was in OT and she despised them. I got a bumbo from my sister that LO sat in like twice. It's still sitting in our living room for no good reason. I'm glad we had a swing, but lo only liked it for a very short period of time. I had way too many bibs... I think it's best to get a few of most things and wait an see what lo likes.

@spaniellove: I would definitely recommend keeping things in their packages - maybe take out one of each item, like pacifier, swaddle, etc. A lot of babies are picky about bottles/nipples/pacifiers (mine wasn't but I have friends who have bought several different types till they found the one LO would take). For nursing pillow, I was loaned one and never used it, just kind of propped my elbows on couch cushions and bed pillows but some ppl swear by them. We have a hand me down exersaucer and both my DS have really enjoyed it but it takes up so much space.

Some things that we didn't think we'd use, we've ended up using as DS got older - bibs, we rarely used till he started consistently feeding himself around 1, now all 20+ we were gifted are super faded. The hooded towel didn't really matter as an infant but as a toddler when I wrap him up after bath, the hood is nice to have (but not essential).

Bottles, definitely! I wish we had just bought a couple of bottles to make sure she liked the brand, then bought the rest once we were sure! We bought three complete sets in the end and it wasn't cheap.

@spaniellove: I would absolutely keep tags/packaging on everything and only take it out if/when you use it!! Even if it needs to be washed, you're going to be doing laundry almost every day anyway ;)

I wish I hadn't spent so much $$$ on buying 10 four ounce avent natural bottles. In the end we didn't end up bfing , I EPed so the more expensive breast-like bottles weren't worth it. Plus I had to buy all new bottles (cheaper this time, ha!) when she started drinking 6oz per feeding anyway.

My only other regrets are bfing items that I couldn't end up using - boppy, nipple shields , nipple cream, nursing bras, nursing tanks, breast soothers, nursing cover (though I did use the nursing cover occasionally while pumping out and about). Basically I wish I would have waited to see what feeding system would work best before going to town and buying every accessory under the sun! Luckily I did get my $$ worth on my pump and pump parts !

The other option is to buy used stuff. A lot of things I wouldn't pay full price for (either because she didn't love them or because they are used such a short period of time). Buying used can cut the cost down to almost 50% and you can always sell it afterwards!

Things on my used list include:
- Bumbo
- Swing (although worth it to buy new)
- Jumperoo
- Exersaucer
- Carriers (some stores even rent these)

I got so many different kinds of carriers (all expensive!!) and he hated(!!!!!) to be worn.

Edit- Mine absolutely loved the swing and the swaddles and pacifiers. He needed lots of soothing.
