We always make a donation and if it is close family or friends we do the Adopt-a-Bench program in Central Park. They put a plaque with the loved ones name on it in memory. It's very special.

A donation is great. Also, once I sent a friend whose mom had died a little bracelet with an angel. I don't know ifnthat was a dumb idea but I wanted to do it.

i'd probably send a $50 check or something (whatever you're comfy with...) helps with bills.

I think a donation to a cause is a much better idea than flowers!

Normally, I see flowers at the funeral that you send in memory of, so that's what we do also.

Flowers or wait to see if they request 'in lieu of flowers..."

Maybe if I was close to them, send a casserole or something.

I think a donation is really nice, Jewish or not. When I've sent a physical item I usually go for something like a gift basket w/ food. I figure food will be useful, but like you said, flowers just die.

:( Sorry to hear..
Koreans usually send money to help with funeral costs and etc. Flowers are also popular items to send.

well, I've fortunately never been in her position. but as a non-Jewish person, i think the donation is fantastic. there are only so many flowers you can take!

I recently posted about a friend who's mother was very ill.... and unfortunately she has passed away :( The Jewish tradition is to send a donation to a charity. Since she passed away from cancer, we would send a donation to something that would go towards finding a cancer cure, or a local hospital for cancer patients, etc. But they're not Jewish, and I know most other people send flowers.

Personally, I'd rather send a donation in her honor because, well, flowers die. But is that weird? Should I just stick with flowers? I need some non Jewish people's perspective!
