@Veggiemama: thanks! I sometimes go without the snappi and haven't had issues yet. But she is still little. Ugh, I really don't want to have to buy a bunch more diapers :(

@Silva: I was hoping to use prefolds through potty training too! But I ended up switching to Bum Genius after I had my second baby for a number of reasons. My oldest eventually despised the snappi's (not sure why maybe it made the diaper too tight or it poked him?) plus it became trickier as he got older to get the prefold on him just right plus the snappi and the cover. I switched to folding the prefold and laying it inside the cover but it usually ended up in a big mess when he pooped and I was doing the wash more often because I needed the covers.

Also, both of my kids have sensitive skin and would end up with rashes due to the wet cotton being on their skin, I was using the stay-dry fleece or hemp liners which was another step and also became gross with the poop! Using the fleece (which worked better than the hemp for some reason) I felt defeated the purpose of trying to use all natural fibers.

Finally, when my oldest started becoming interested in the potty it was hard for him to get the cover off (and obviously I didn't want him grabbing a snappi) and the BG were easier for him to slide down if needed. There is another kind (maybe Flip?) that have stretchy sides that seem like they would be really good for potty training but I didn't find out about them until later and I wasn't about to spend more money on another kind of diaper!

Anyway that is my long answer of why I switched. I did really like prefolds though, especially during the infant stage.

Oh right! You should definitely get cloth wipes. Like the liners, they just get thrown in the same wash. You can make your own wipe solution, but we just use water in a spray bottle. We also use coconut oil for diaper cream.

Thanks for all the input, ladies!

I chose an assortment because I have to order everything overseas and each order takes a long time to arrive. I don't have the flexibility of a short delivery time, so hopefully I'll find a good few that I love within the mix.

I hadn't considered having to rematch inserts after every wash though! That could be a problem.. thanks for pointing that out @Veggiemama.

I'm definitely going to get 2 pail liners and 2 wet bags to add to this. Please keep the suggestions coming if anyone has any more!

Cloth wipes?

We use a rubbermaid bin with locking lid for dipes at home when dirty, wetbags for daycare (and they got tossed in the wash with dipes).

Seems like you have a great assortment, and hopefully all work for you, and you will probably figure out your faves pretty quick! I just use one brand of dipes, so don't have solid experience with so many options!

I ended up hating prefolds when she was an infant and AIO's all the time, but now that she's nearly six months old, I love prefolds and we use covers/inserts for daycare. Your stash looks like a good one, and is certainly larger than what I had prior to birth, which was:

36 NB prefolds
24 small prefolds
4 Thirsties size small covers
6 Thirsties covers size 1
10 BumGenius Freetimes

I gave away 24 of my NB diapers and sold my BumGenius, and now I have 18 inserts (BumGenius, Flip, gDiapers, and Best Bottoms), my same six Thirsties size 1 covers, and 4 medium gDiaper covers.

@Silva: I had almost identical to what you listed! Although I used disposable NB for the first month and then went straight to the infant size prefolds. I had 3 dozen infant, 2 dozen medium and then 2 dozen of the large size. It worked really well until my then 2 1/2 y.o. started becoming interested in the potty and I also had another baby. I switched to BG 4.0's plus a few of the cloth trainers for my toddler. I have managed well with 18 diapers for the two of them.

@Glitter: I liked using one system only, prefolds plus covers at first and then switched to Bum Genius as I mentioned above. But I have friends who love having a variety of diapers for different situations, it just depends on your preference! It may be overwhelming when you do the wash though to match all the inserts with the proper diapers etc.

I would definitely get 2 large wetbags plus a garbage pail and 1-2 small wetbags for on the go. Mine are all doing great after over 3 years of use! Also think about cloth wipes, I had my MIL make some for me using flannel and terry cloth. You can also find some homemade ones on facebook CD groups or Etsy that would be cheaper than the ones made by the companies.

You've got more than I do! I'm planning to use disposables until she grows into the cloth, then I have 9 pocket diapers right now, and plan to pick up 6 AIOs. I want to start with those and see how I like them before deciding what else to buy.

I second @Danda - we rented newborns because they grow out of them so fast. We did a rental after, because we had no idea what we would like. Turns out, neither of us liked prefolds, and AIOs seemed like we were doing laundry constantly. We love AI2s - bestbottoms are perfect for us.

Plus, different brands fit differently - it's great to know which ones work and which don't.

It just seems like you have a wide variety, which might be a waste if you don't like some, ya know?

You have a huge variety! I might recommend ordering a trial package (I know I've seen one or more online) so that you can truly test drive and find out what works best for you and mostly stock up on that one or two types.

In my case we did a newborn rental from modernclothdiaper.com and then I bought one diaper each of a few types that I though would work best following the rental. I found out that I don't like AIO and that I was prone to problems with the insert sticking out causing leaking in Fuzzibunz (much more of an issue in newborn size where it is so tiny). I ended up using almost exclusively Bumgenius 4.0 for daytime and fitteds with cover for night.

@Glitter: 11 months now. She is on the small sIde, but I expect we will need to get maybe 2 dozen in the large size prefold as well. She is nowhere near out of the medium yet, so maybe we will make it.

A disposable garbage bag full of dirty diapers ripping on the way to your washer would be horrible. I also say you need two pail liners! You should also get a wetbag if you're going to use CDs on the go.

oh- I did receive a couple random pocket diapers as a shower gift too. I don't really like them- I have a couple jungle roos which work relatively well, and a fuzzibunz. I can't ever seem to get the fit right on the snaps. The thirsties covers we have are amazing. We've had one blowout ever (and Nothing was going to contain that epic poop), and the only leeks have been the result of user error (leaving some of the cloth poking out form the cover).
prefolds & covers aren't as cute as some other options, but they have worked so, so well for us and are really simple.

It looks good, but if cost is an issue you could do it for a lot less.
Our stash, which has worked fine from birth until now:

24 newborn green mountain diapers prefolds
36 small GMD prefolds
36 medium GMD prefolds

6 size one thirsties duo snap wrap
6 size two thirsties duo snap wrap

3 joey hemp doublers
2 wool covers (we used these and the doublers at night until about 10 months, now we use disposables at night)

2 wet bags (definitely just get reusable, its super easy, I just turn it inside out to dump the dirty diapers into the wash, and throw the bag in. hang to dry)- I can't remember the brand, ours have a drawstring which I like

set of 5 snappis.

I am trying to decide what to purchase for my cloth diaper stash. This is entirely new to me. I know nobody personally who has cloth diapered. I want good quality but don't want to go overboard in terms of cost. Please help, offer advice, tell me if this stash looks sufficient, anything I should add, remove, thoughts on brands, experience, anything, everything!

Thanks
