I don't know all the politics of adoption, but I have family who is extremely involved in Romanian (which closed international adoption years ago) orphanage mission work and I don't know how any country can be ok with how many of those children are treated. I think the best interest of any child is to be placed in a loving home wherever that home may be. Learning about RAD from my family and hearing stories about how many orphans are actually living in the streets in Romania, it's just really sad they can't get it together.

It makes me almost sick.

I have friends who have adopted Russian kids, and other friends who have been to Russian orphanages on mission trips. I know there are some good orphanages over there where the children are well-cared for and loved, but I've also heard of really horrendous conditions... where they kids have never, ever been outside, in the daylight, in their lives. And where it is eerily silent when you walk in.. no babies crying because the babies have learned that no one will tend to them if they cry, so why bother. If you google "Russian orphanage conditions" you will read even worse things.

I'm just so so sad for the kids that will never have families now, and for the families in the middle of the process who had already met the children they were going to adopt... how heartbreaking.

They are banning it because they know it will hurt Americans not for any other reason. Other countries have banned it because of the social reasons which I think are fair. It isn't like we adopt american kids out to Russians (I don't think there is a ban but we don't do it). There are some countries that have banned it because they had too many child trafficking issues and are theoretically working on those issues first.

What's going on in Russia sounds so difficult for everyone involved... so many heartbroken parents and children. :(

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/28/world/europe/putin-to-sign-ban-on-us-adoptions-of-russian-children.html

I've tried to think through the situation from the perspective of the country. I've read that many countries see foreign adoption as a form of humiliation... intellectually, I can understand that perspective.

Overall though, I think that the most important thing to do is to is to follow the best interests of the children. If as a country you'd like to ban foreign adoption, it seems incumbent upon you as a country to encourage domestic adoptions and better support/fund orphanages, foster homes and in-home support for at-risk parents. In the absence of that sort of effort, I can't support a ban of this type.
