@periwinklebee: Do you wish the Congressional system had been ditched, then? Because the electoral system is based on that, which is based on population. Slavery affected the tallies when slavery existed, but isn't the direct reason for the EC. It was a results of the Constitutional Compromises..... Sorry, middle school SS teacher here, just a bit uneasy about the oversimplifications....

The only reason we have the electoral college anyways is because of slavery. Slave states got to count their slave population as 3/5 of a person when it came to calculating how many representatives (and electoral college votes) they had, but obviously didn't have to let slaves vote. I wish it had been ditched after the Civil War.

I see the pros and cons to both systems. I could go either way, but since no one on this thread has reviewed the benefits / reasoning behind the electoral college, I'll take a stab at it during commercials :)

It's important to remember that the electoral college system is based on population and the popular vote, it just mutes the effect. A purely equal system would be that all the states have the same amount of votes. The benefit of the EC is that it ensures the candidate has wider support across the land/states, and can't just run up HUGE margins in a small area (like NYC / the megalopolis on the East Coast) and lose everywhere else. The president is not just the president of the people, but also manages our land, our resources, and 50 individual state governments.

FWIW, I lived in a solid blue state, a swing state, and a red state. I am a solid Democrat. My vote has ALWAYS mattered.

@ShootingStar: I dont like it either like you said it makes people feel like not voting especially people who live in states that are solid red or blue. Only people in swing states really feel like their vote actually truly matters

It sucks & is so very antiquated. Between this & only having 2 major parties, I definitely feel like I am not well represented by our government. There is much that should be overhauled asap. But of course career politicians who could make this change have a vested interest to keep the status quo. So maddening.

I don't like the electoral college and wish we went to a direct popular vote. However, I don't like this proposed solution. I think that would just lead to a new set of problems. I think the solution is to actually fix the way voting happens not have the electoral college make some sort of non-binding agreeement about doing things in a way not originally intended by the law.

@Adira: but the electoral college doesn't have to follow this agreement. They get fined 1000 if they vote differently but some do. Just saw on the news one for sure who said he wasn't voting for trump or clinton

Each state determines how they allot their electoral college votes. Most states have decided to adopt a winner-takes-all version, so if one candidate wins 51% of the votes, they get all the EC votes. But some states split up their EC votes by district (Maine and Nebraska are the only two), so the winner of each districts gets a set number of votes and then the winner overall gets another vote (or something like that).

So states can decide to change the way they allot their EC votes if they wanted to.

I was talking about this with my DH today. I would love it if electoral college votes could be split based on the popular vote. I voted blue in a red state so it does feel a bit like my vote doesn't count.

I'm curious what other people think of the electoral college process we have in the US. I personally hate it. I think it makes the vast majority of people feel like their vote is meaningless.

I learned today that there's been an effort to ensure that the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote nationwide is elected president. To do this, states make a pact to award all their respective electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. It will go into effect once they get to enough agreement to have 270 electoral votes (the same number needed to win a presidential election).
