@lawbee11: My LO is only 14 months old so I don't really have enough knowledge about what older kids like. She doesn't eat candy yet so she would like the toys better! I know my niece doesn't love sweets so she would like the toys, but she's weird. I mean really, she complained when there was powered sugar on her french toast. Who does that?

Crossing my fingers that the kids love your toys :)

I must've been a super dork because I LOVED getting pencils and erasers! Shaped like Pumpkins! Are you kidding me?! haha. I would do a mix of both though. We don't get too many trick-or-treaters unfortunately.. but I've noticed a little "small child" boom in our neighborhood, so hopefully that changes.

I think the younger kids will like it but a candy stash for older ones is a good idea. I was thinking about doing gift certs to McDonalds/local pizza place but then need a back-up plan since many of those are limited in what age can redeem them and I know many of the kiddos who come by would be over the limit.

Glad to see this post, I always think about doing a non candy thing to but just can't seem to do it because I'm scared kids just won't like it. I think maybe I'll do a mixture and let them pick. Who knows,.... maybe since they already have so much candy they'll actually pick a toy! And if I see a lot of them picking toys I'll do all toys next year. And if not.... I'll know to skip the toys next year.

as a kid, candy was king and would barter with my brother and neighborhood kids; money was ok, toys i'd play with for a few minutes and not really care about again, was disappointed to see pencils and raisins.

You could always toss some candy in there too so the kids can choose...
We live in a big neighborhood but we get hardly any trick or treaters because we're at the top of a hill at the end of a cul-de-sac, but I'd totally do a mix of toys and candy if we got a lot of them. Lazy kids!

Our neighbor is "that woman" and the kids love it. Every year she sets up a table and has a few things to choose from. Pencils, stickers, toys, raisins, etc. People can't wait to see what she has every year and I never, ever see kids skipping her house.

It's not like you'll be handing out popcorn balls or apples. haha. Anyone else get those? Of course I was a kid in the late seventies/early 80's and wasn't allowed to eat this stuff anyway.

I must be in the minority, I thought it was cool when there were things other than candy (as long as they weren't like cheap-o spider rings). I remember always looking forward to one house because they gave packets of hot cocoa. Another house that was super popular did a a ton of decorating and kind of a haunted house...and at the end you got a religious tract and a pencil and kids still flocked there.

Maybe do a mix of toys and candy to see what the kids in your neighborhood are into?

@photojane: I'm glad to hear that. I am thinking about getting a back-up candy stash for the older kids. I think the treasure box will be a hit with the elementary school kids, but probably not so much with the middle schoolers.

as a former teacher, i can tell you that the kids will 100% love it. i actually had a treasure box in my classroom that had little toys AND candy, and the kids chose a toy 95% of the time. the kids will get so much candy that night that i really think they'll love to have an unexpected surprise toy. go for it!

@Rock n Roll: Yeah, I know what you mean about all the little crappy toys! They also have Halloween/skeleton glow-in-the dark necklaces and bracelets. Those might be nice cause the kids can wear them while trick or treating, then the parents can just chunk them in the morning cause they won't be glowing anymore anyways.

I think the kids will love it! It's fun to get something like that.

As a parent, that crap drives me crazy because once candy is gone, it's gone, but little toys are just everywhere forever! We have so many little toys from party goodie bags and happy meals or whatever. I never know what to do with them. Like, I don't think Goodwill really wants that stuff, but I feel bad throwing it away. And the kids generally only want to play with it for maybe a day. I don't know. I just throw them in the toy box and they live down there in the bottom.

DH and I just moved to the 'burbs in May, so this will be our first Halloween in our new neighborhood. There are tons of families near us, so we're expecting quite a few trick-or-treaters. I really want to hand out something other than candy because kids get SO much candy.

I found some cute things on Oriental Trading's website like this treasure chest of goodies:

http://www.orientaltrading.com/deluxe-halloween-treasure-chest-toy-assortment-a2-25_2322.fltr?prodCatId=388938&tabId=7

Or these stamps:

http://www.orientaltrading.com/trick-or-treat-stampers-a2-25_6468.fltr?prodCatId=388786&tabId=7

I am just worried we'll be known as the lame house that doesn't give candy! Do you think this will be a hit or a flop?
