What is the reasoning for feeding cereal at all? I hear a lot of folks say that you don't need to, but I still haven't grasped why doctors still recommend it.

We have done cereal in morning and fruit/veggie with cereal mixed in at night. 3 meals was too many for her to keep up the needed formula. I'm thinking of doing fruit/veggie in morning with cereal and then meat at night now that we can introduce that as well.

I was just going to say that cereal for a whole month straight sounds excessive! We started solids at 4.5 months and I did rice cereal for the first week, but then moved on to purees.

At 11 mos LO still has oatmeal almost every morning...but it's mixed with fruit.

We will be skipping grains entirely after a lot of research - I think your gut feeling is correct. I'd stop the cereals now and go right to veggies and fruits.

@chopsuey119: @Mrsjets: @MamaCate: @sarac: Thank you all so much for your input. DH just goes with exactly what the doctor says and doesn't question it so I haven't had much validation for my gut feeling that this is a little cereal heavy... I think I'll start with a call to the doctor to discuss stopping cereals now that we have tested for allergies. :)

I never really understood the need to emphasize grains so much as a first food. My daughter got fruits and yogurt first, and at 19 months still likes grains less than anything else, which I think is really healthy. I'd personally give just about anything else first.

Hmmm, my LO was BF and we actually skipped cereals entirely and went right topurees. Her milk to me was still the most important thing so we went really slow. I think we did 1 solids meal per day at 6 months, 2 at 7 months, then 3 at 8 months. It probably didnt need to be that slow.

When we started, i anxiously asked my ped for advice and his basic reply was: there's no real science to it. Feed her avariety of foods and try to give her what you eat when you can.

So i would say to do what you think is right to you. It helped me to remember the goal is getting her ready for table foods around one,, so its not worth stressing too much...

I wish I could help but I EBF and then postponed cereals until he was comfortable with fruits/veg. I was also pretty relaxed about solids and felt like if he didn't want them it wasn't a big deal - I've always heard the "food before 1 is just for fun" and figured he got all he really needed with nursing.

I skipped cereal since my LO hated it! Went straight to veggies (sweet potato was her first solid).
Also, at 6 months you can feed your LO whole milk yogurt and so many other yummies. I personally don't think it's necessary to do cereal for an entire month! So many nutrient rich fruits and veggies that taste so much better than cereal..

This is what the pediatrician said to do, so we have been pretty much following it, but it seems super slow to me!

Week 1 (6 months old): Rice cereal 2x/day, bfast and dinner times

Week 2: Barley cereal 2x/day

Week 3: Oatmeal cereal 2x/day

Week 4: Mixed grain cereal 2x/day

Week 5 and beyond: Continue cereal at bfast/dinner times, introduce vegetables at lunch time, starting with green, to orange, to yellow. 3-4 days per vegetable before going to the next one.

After veggies: Start fruits around bfast time (when she's getting cereal)

After fruits: Meats around dinner time

What I've actually been doing since getting to week 5: mixed grain or barley cereal in the AM, a veggie in the PM.

The doctor said that the iron in the cereal is good for LO (who is FF, if that makes a difference.) But 2x/day? She didn't say which to continue with. LO had a little trouble drinking enough formula with 3 meals/day so I'm only doing 2.

I don't know, I trust the doctor, but this seems pretty far off from what others are doing at the 6 (almost 7) month mark and I'm wondering if so much cereal is necessary/good for her.
