I assume military because I have never been exposed to other jobs that would keep someone out of the country for years at a time. I also assumed military after you said you were moving back to the states for a while, but were only going to be where you were moving to for a short period of time.

@looch: @MamaMoose: Not all the snap judgements are negative, just quick assumptions. People often have a very specific idea of what it means to live abroad.
The negative ones are usually one of two things - either they think I'm rich and just move around the world for the fun of it and don't really work (SOOO not true, lol) or they think I'm a complete bum and just sort of float around trying to find odd jobs while seeing the world (still not true).

By the way, MAMAMOOSE, you are right. I grew up a military kid and then a missionary kid, and I now do aid work. Good guess!

Well it's sort of unfair because I know you've been abroad since childhood. I don't know why but because of that I always assumed you were in some sort of aid position (peace corps, teaching English as a second language, etc.) I kind of figured that's what your parents did and they instilled a love for it in you. My second guess is that you have a military connection because I know you move a lot. But I make no assumption about your personality or the kind of person you are. I'm very surprised to hear that people do.

Really, people are making snap judgements of you because you live overseas? In a negative sense? I moved abroad for both a job and a relationship, most people in my circle relocate for work.

I've never come across that, most people in my life know that I am an American living abroad and have nothing but good things to say about it.

I assume that you are an American, and somehow I loosely assume you live in Europe (otherwise, people tend to specify at least the continent.) I also assume you are in a job that is either difficult to explain or sensitive in nature. I tend to hear more "I'm a missionary in Papua New Guinea" or "I'm on a trip to Brazil" or "I'm on assignment abroad." When you say you live abroad, I assume you are settled somewhere and don't have a permanent home in the states, which (in my mind) rules out travel writer, journalist, businessperson, missionary in legal territory, military contractor, etc. The only person I knew who said "I'm going abroad for a while" was on a rescue mission to get some US citizens out of some deep trouble - and I'm pretty sure it wasn't quite legal.

I would assume that you had moved overseas to be with a partner, rather than for a job--but that's a completely unfair assumption to make!

The only people I know who live overseas live there because of a relationship or because they're teachers.

...that I live overseas? I get interesting reactions sometimes. People make a snap judgement of who I am as a person.
So it got me to thinking. There are many different types of international jobs, but which one do you think of first?

Going a step further, what type of person do you imagine in the job?

When I think of a computer tech, for instance, my immediate mind picture is a male, dark short hair, bold glasses, kind of quiet, overall a good person but not the "hero" risk taker type. Not at all true of many computer techs obviously, but still what jumps to my mind.
What are the stereotypical, "instant reaction", whatever pops into your head, kind of people you imagine in these common international jobs:

International Businessman/woman
Missionary
Travel Writer
Tour Guide
Charity Worker/Teacher
