@Kimberlybee: So sorry about your DD's eczema - it is such a pain in the derrière to deal with! I truly hate eczema with a passion but with a combo of all those tips hopefully it will keep the major flare ups at bay. Let me know if it works and if you figure out any other tricks. My younger DD now has eczema too. Blah!

ETA: if the flare up is bad, using a thin coat of hydrocortisone sealed with Aquaphor 2x a day for 2-3 days max helped reset my daughter. Eczema is a violent cycle of the itch and scratch, and the hydrocortisone can help break that cycle. It's usually my last resort if nothing else works and the spot just won't go away. :bummed:

@littleveesmommy: My DD is battling a horrible eczema flare up but it really looks like hives, not sure though?! The pediatrician confirmed it being eczema and prescribed fluticasone cream. Thanks for these tips, will definitely try it!

We've been using eucerin after the bath and throughout the day although we are pretty sure it is triggered by food allergy. One that we've definitely identified is soy but we are still working on finding out other triggers.

DD had pretty bad eczema for the first year of her life starting around 3 months and here was my routine to help minimize irritation:
- No soaps/body wash and bath in lukewarm water only. If you have to soap the butt, do it at the very end and remove baby from bath to avoid soap exposure to eczema patches.
- Pour 1/2 cup of old fashions rolled oats in a clean sock, tie a knot, and use that to bath. Try squeezing the oatmeal "juice" onto the bad patches - it helps with the irritation.
- Bath only every other day, if possible.
- Slather on cream as soon as possible and when skin is still damp. I didn't bother toweling off DD but just wrapped a towel around her to bring her to her changing mat then lube her up! We love CeraVe Moisturizing Cream (packaged in a round tub) and Aquaphor to seal it all in for bad patches.
- Make sure to reapply cream at least 3 times a day.
- Stick with cotton clothing for breathability.

I hope this helps!

Oatmeal baths work wonders on my dry flaky skin. I had a friend that has eczema recommend it to me.

Fill up the bath with warm water. Put about a cup of regular plain oatmeal in a cutoff foot of pantyhose and tie an knot in the end. Your little one can play with it in the water and squeeze it to release the "oatmeal milk" it makes the water cloudy. I also use it to rub on my arms and legs. It gets slimy after a while but rinses off easily. Works a lot better than many lotions I've tried.

@Smurfette: We use the German version of there products for our bath and lotion:
http://usa.weleda.com/our-products/shop/Baby-Derma-White-Mallow-Body-Lotion.aspx
http://usa.weleda.com/our-products/shop/calendula-cream-bath.aspx
Its expensive but helps prevent the eczema... For the actual eczema we use something with ceramide but the product itself is not available in the US.
I just make sure it is something without artificial colour, synthetic perfume and preservatives

For daily use and maintenance, we use CeraVe moisturizing cream (not the lotion).

When they get a bad flareup, we have a Rx for steroid cream, but really don't need to use that often.

The CeraVe is amazing at managing it. Since we've started using it, they haven't had a bad flareup at all.

Wash with soap only a few times a week instead of at every bath. Lotion immediately after bath time and twice a day. We use vanicream as suggested by LO's allergist. It isn't greasy like Aquaphor and very thick. It can be found in drug stores and on Amazon as well. We treat bad eczema spots with prescription steroid cream.
