We use the Ubbi like @MrsLipGloss:, and I think it's really good. Totally contains the smell (even now that LO is eating solids), plus you can use any trash bags with it, so once you buy it, you're done with the expense. And it's a very slim profile, which was important for us too (limited space in his last nursery).

We use the diaper genie as well. I wasn't going to register for one, but DH insisted he wanted one. I love it! We did find that the generic target refills didn't contain the stink as well. So now I do subscribe and save on amazon for the refills

So I was not a diaper genie fan pre-baby but DH wanted one because all the parents he spoke to raved about it. I said OK, whatever, only thing he asked for on the registry.

LOVE the thing. Bags aren't terribly expensive via S&S and I even did a garbage bag hack once and it stunk up her room. With the bags and the genie I've never had a stink issue and her poops S T I N K.

Is it absolutely necessary? Of course not, nothing else besides a basic crib and safe car seat is absolutely necessary with a baby! But it sure is nice! ;)

We use a small trash can with a lid and pedal opener for disposables. It's just the size for a grocery store bag so there are never too many in the room. Our pup is very interested in poopy diapers (gross dog!) but as long at the lid is closed he just goes over for a sniff and walks away.

We're registered for the diaper dekkor, but I think I might just go to bed bath & beyond and buy a nice simplehuman wastebasket instead. I don't really understand the difference other than the lid closing differently and I want it to look nice since everything will be out in the open.

I plan to get an Ubbi... I hate diaper genies and have found from my babysitting years that plastic ones don't do well with odors. Having dogs I don't want them smelling anything "yummy!" and I do NOT want to have to buy special bags. Plus I like that it converts to a trash can when not a diaper pail.

DS is 9 months and we've been fine using a regular trash can with a lid. We have a simple human one but only because I wanted something really small and narrow. Oh and it fits grocery bags perfectly and it has these notches at the ends that you loop the grocery bag over so when it's empty and you throw something in there, the bag doesn't collapse inside the trash can. Now that he's on more solids and his poops stink, we just throw out poopy diapers right away.

I don't know if this is a bit naive but I haven't bought anything, not even a rubbish bin for the nursery.

I don't have a kitchen bin, I hang a supermarket carrier bag on a cupboard handle while im cooking, use that for waste, then take it straight out to the bin when im done.

I'm just planning to take the nappies out every time.... I may well eat my words!!

@fancyfunction: that's sort of what I'm wondering-- we already save plastic grocery bags for the dog... but then I wonder if I'm one of those people who gets confused with babies and dogs!

Hopefully baby will be EBF so maybe we'd be fine with a cheapo lidded can to start with then see what happens...

We are going to a Buy Buy Baby registry completion event on Sunday and one of the last things we need to figure out is the diaper disposal situation.

What do you use for your disposable diapers? Diaper Genie or other specific diaper pail? A regular trash can with a lid? We live in an apartment, trash bin is 2 flights down, but we also walk the dog every day so it wouldn't be hard to take that trash out very frequently. I want something that will contain the smell for a day or two but don't intend to be filling it all the way up and letting them sit for weeks. So, something I won't feel bad about emptying when it's half full, where I don't have to touch anything too gross (for the most part). Also space is very limited in the nursery.
