I found a really good sale on the Halogen brand sweaters (v neck and tunic style) on cyber Monday, and they are my new obsession this winter - so soft, they just make me happy. I think having a few nice sweaters works well for a capsule style wardrobe, as they can easily be dressed up with jewelry or a scarf. If I need to be a little more formal, I have several blazers, but I'm not really a fan. I find sweaters more comfortable.

@looch: well, I went looking for cardigans from Target but I didn't like them. I ended up buying a blazer (gray) but I haven't worn it yet.

While my work is more casual, I can wear jeans. I always prefer nice looking tops to go with them. I have a deep love of target cardigans, they have long arms (a super plus for my long armed self) and come in both solids and patterns and embellished so I feel like I can really mix it up.

Oh I agree on blazers! I'd go for a few fun and Versatile one that's not as "business professional" since I think you implied it's more business casual?
Something like this that can easily be mixed and matched but has fun details:

[attach=1597/16/oi8e67.337x600.IMG_8726.PNG]

Also, I have this blazer below. The sweatshirt part can be unzipped to be more professional. The fabric is a stretchy knit and so comfortable. I love it

I've gotten rid of every blazer that has lapels like those in the front, IMO, they look really dated. Maybe it's because I have been wearing blazers for a really long time, but if I were buying now, I'd not be buying any of that kind of style.

Blazers can be a lot more fun, right now I am wearing a lot of what would be called a "lady" style, with a rounded collar and nipped in waist. These look fantastic over a dress or skirt.

@mediagirl: Another vote here for blazers too! I've gotten some nice knit, but still semi-structured ones recently at the Loft outlet (so might be able to find online if you don't have one in your area). The ones at the J. Crew outlet were still more $$ than I wanted to pay, but looked/felt nice.

The best place I've found for blazers is upscale/nice consignment shops. So many people buy blazers and then never wear them that I've snagged several like-new blazers dirt cheap. J. Crew, Nordstrom, Brooks Brothers, etc too so good brands. Of course, consignment shopping is hit or miss but worth checking out.

I did some more window-shopping for you, so get ready for a treatise. :) I know that blazers are really expensive compared to say a shirt or cardigan, but I feel like a nice jacket really pulls everything together. And my closet is proof that they last a really long time if you choose wisely. :)

Anyhow, here are some things that I think I'd try out/avoid if I were shopping.

Look for: Classic lapels, one or two buttons in front, a defined waist, and wool. You can find summer weight wool, or seasonless wool too, but right now most fabrics will be heavier weights. If you get nothing else, get a great-fitting jacket in navy! Some options:

http://www.landsend.com/products/womens-sporty-blazer/id_298423?sku_0=::IO5

http://www.landsend.com/products/womens-navy-blazer/id_302520?sku_0=::A6J

http://www.landsend.com/products/womens-washable-wool-one-button-blazer/id_217276?sku_0=::BLA

https://factory.jcrew.com/womens-clothing/blazers_outerwear/blazers/PRDOVR~F7409/F7409.jsp?color_name=hthr-oatmeal (Gray is versatile and this one looks nice.)

https://factory.jcrew.com/womens-clothing/blazers_outerwear/blazers/PRDOVR~F5927/F5927.jsp?color_name=blue (Love the light blue herringbone.)

http://www.anntaylor.com/tweed-pocket-jacket/415503?skuId=22071125&defaultColor=1878&colorExplode=false&catid=cata000013 (I'd get the matching pants too so you have the suit if you want it.)

http://www.anntaylor.com/herringbone-blazer/417948?skuId=21971266&defaultColor=6615&colorExplode=false&catid=cata000017 (This comes close to violating the no prints rule, but it's a small houndstooth and B/W, so it's essentially a neutral.)

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/vince-camuto-stretch-cotton-one-button-blazer-regular-petite/4562755?origin=category-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=NEW%20IVORY (Definitely summery. And white jackets will need to be dry-cleaned more frequently than other colors, so keep that in mind.)

And the J.Crew Rhodes. I'd personally get the emerald and red ones and pair them with a black, navy, or printed skirt and some sort of shirt like the models are wearing (stripes or solid).

Also, this one is crazy expensive, but amazing. Look for things that look like this (with or without the elbow patches, which I think are fun, but definitely limit it a bit)! http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/smythe-duchess-suede-trim-wool-blend-blazer/4393417?origin=category-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=BLACK

If you want less formal/a little funkier, these look nice:

http://www.anntaylor.com/fringe-tweed-jacket/422328?skuId=22034557&defaultColor=9192&colorExplode=false&catid=cata000017 (Fun! Although I wonder if the wrist fringe will start to fray? I'd feel better about it without fringe around the wrists.)

https://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi40418&defaultColor=0573&N=10229&No=24&selectedConcept=&_=1481805774776&Nrpp=24&Nr=AND(OR(product.siteId%3ATalbotsSite)%2COR(product.catalogId%3Acatalog20002))

https://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi40202&defaultColor=4146&N=10229&No=48&selectedConcept=&_=1481805943345&Nrpp=24& Nr=AND(OR(product.siteId%3ATalbotsSite)%2COR(product.catalogId%3Acatalog20002)) (Again, I'm kind of conservative in clothes--except on color!--and I feel like most no-button/draped collar styles will get dated pretty fast. But this draped collar looks like it will stand the test of time. I like the red one with white pants.)

https://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi40112&defaultColor=7349&N=10229&No=&selectedConcept=&Nrpp=110&ViewAll=True&Nr=AND(OR(product.siteId%3ATalbotsSite)%2COR(product.catalogId%3Acatalog20002)) (This would be good for spring/summer/fall.)

https://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi40325&defaultColor=3673&N=10229&No=&selectedConcept=&Nrpp=110&ViewAll=True&Nr=AND(OR(product.siteId%3ATalbotsSite)%2COR(product.catalogId%3Acatalog20002)) (Corduroy! In pink! I like the way they've dressed the model, only I'd wear ponte pants or a skirt instead of jeans.)

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/caslon-knit-one-button-blazer-regular-petite/4559786?origin=category-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=NAVY%20PEACOAT (This might veer too far into sweatshirt territory, so you'd need to check out the fabric in person.)

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/olivia-moon-knit-blazer-regular-petite/3679610?origin=category-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=NAVY

Generally avoid: the inverted collar. Like I said above, I feel like the inverted collar is a trend that is a bit too cool and won't last. I tried not to drop $100+ (or $200+!) on a trendy item when I was shopping for work clothes. I also feel like the inverted collar has pretty sharp lines. I'm tall and thin and more angles don't really do me any favors. From your photo, I'd say you're in the same boat, so I'd stick with softer lines and less boxiness overall.

That said, this one's an interesting shape. I feel like the inverted collar works okay here and is more classic-looking because of the belt and the fabric: https://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi40687&defaultColor=0588&N=10229&selectedConcept= (I had a hard time with Talbots sizing, but maybe they’ve changed things up. In any event, I feel like although it's marketed to women who are much older, they have nice quality and if you stay away from the boxier cuts, you can find good stuff there.)

Also, do not open the side pockets on blazers! Pretend they’re not there. Pockets generally come stitched closed (well, except for the breast pocket, if there is one) and you should leave them that way (ditto on pants). Gaping pockets destroy the lines of a jacket. For carrying stuff around the office, I had a little wristlet pouch that held my keys, phone, and a pen. (Avert your eyes! Everything is wrong here: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/topshop-george-open-jersey-boyfriend-blazer/4407321?origin=category-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=NAVY%20BLUE But only the pocket is a problem in this one. I’m surprised the photo shoot stylist let this happen, it would have been really good otherwise: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/caslon-knit-one-button-blazer-regular-petite/4559786?origin=related-4559786-0-2-PP_4-Data_Lab_Recommendo_V2-fbt_similar_items&recs_type=related&recs_productId=4559786&recs_categoryId=0&recs_productOrder=2&recs_placementId=PP_4&recs_source=Data_Lab_Recommendo_V2&recs_strategy=fbt_similar_items&recs_referringPageType=item_page )

Okay, I'm done. Apparently I have lots of feelings about blazers. :silly:

@mediagirl: my baggiest scrubs. essentially pajamas. i know, so unhelpful but i love my job because i can wear loose scrubs! but some young girls wear cute t shirts from the gift shop the hospital sells, but i am at the point where loose t shirts are so unflattering with the thin cotton, i need real thick tops.

@mediagirl: oh just saw this response! Yes blazers!! One of my favorites ever is from Zara.

I have a few great ones I got at J Crew factory. Just got a couple cute ones at Old Navy too.

I'm wearing a version of a blazer today that is structured, no collar, looks knit and is flowy in the front but otherwise fitted - from h&m.

Zara:

@mediagirl: I do a lot of pants in the winter too... or leggings with a dress or tunic top and boots.

My go-to is usually a blazer... I have a bunch, some dressier, some more casual and striped. Those are easy with a tank under and pants....

I also do button downs tucked in, sleeves rolled, or a flowy silk(style) shirt or peplum top.... I always find these kind of tops at TJ Max or Marshalls. If they are too flowy I belt them with a thin little silver or gold belt.

@mediagirl: I looked at J. Crew: https://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/blazers.jsp That's the velvet one I have, just in a different color. ;) I think the other ones I have are closest to the Rhodes. I'm not a huge fan of their Regents. Kind of too "cool" for office purposes.

For (slightly) casual Friday I might wear a jacket like this: https://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/outerwear/trenchesandanoraks/PRDOVR~19034/19034.jsp (I own this. It is structured for a field jacket style. It might start to look a little dated in a few years due to all the "hardware" on it, though, so buy the more standard style jackets first.)

I wear black pants pretty much every single day, year round (usually fitted ankle pants, but sometimes slacks. Note: fitted, not skin-tight/skinny).

I prefer solids to prints, so I usually stick to a single color top, with a shirt underneath if it is chilly out. This is simple and easy on "tired mom, can't think straight" mornings. Bonus is that I can pop on a black blazer if I suddenly need to look more dressy for a meeting.

Winter tops are a sweater, layered with a shirt underneath if it is chilly or I just want to mix things up a bit. Chunky statement necklace is also an easy way to mix it up. Currently loving the cotton-wool Teddie sweater from JCrew Factory for solid colors. https://factory.jcrew.com/womens-clothing/sweaters/crewnecks_boatnecks/PRDOVR~F5199/F5199.jsp?color_name=hthr-graphite

Fall/spring get 3/4 sleeve tunics (Limited had some good ones - trimmed Logan blouse) http://www.thelimited.com/product/trimmed-logan-blouse/4226596.html?cgid=womens-tops&prefn1=saleStatus&swatch=n&start=106&prefv1=regular&dwvar_4226596_colorCode=643&ppid=c106

And summer is cap-sleeve, short sleeve, or 3/4 tops like this pleated keyhole shell from Limited, or some similar ones from JCrew factory that are not currently in stock (it gets hot in TX but air condition blasts indoors...) http://www.thelimited.com/product/pleated-keyhole-shell/4175760.html?cgid=womens-tops&prefn1=saleStatus&swatch=n&start=156&prefv1=regular&dwvar_4175760_colorCode=150&ppid=c156

It is a totally mindless, idiot proof work wardrobe that can be as simple or as fun as I feel like on any given day.

@mediagirl: J. Crew had nice blazer options. I'm not sure if they still do because they don't seem to feature them in their catalogs much and I don't go to the store, but they're worth a look. I think I saw a cute tweed one in a catalog recently. I have a couple of them in funkier materials like seersucker and velvet (I love that one, but it totally pushed the boundaries of business attire, so it was worn sparingly!).

Ann Taylor's are good (here: http://www.anntaylor.com/jackets/cata000017?SortByFacetSelectedValue=remove&DocSortOrder=remove&catid=cata000017&question=&fRequest=true&goToPage=1&N=102368&categoryType=regular&priceSort=DESC&country=&currency=&Submit=Submit). However, I would stay away from prints on jackets in general and most embellishments (ruffles, trim, etc). I feel like those things date a jacket pretty quickly, and I'm all about buying once and keeping it for a long time! I'm not sure that I'd buy many jackets with 3/4 length sleeves, mostly because it doesn't seem very practical.

Nordstrom's Caslon and Halogen lines usually have some in knits, I think. Try to get ones that are lined. The lining helps them keep their structure, even if it usually makes it necessary to dry clean them.

I really like Theory too. It's on the more expensive side of reasonable even on sale, but definitely worth it. I used to get suits/blazers from their outlet stores or on sale at a department store. Their skirt suits are pretty amazing. I still have several from 10+ years ago!

@honeybear: great suggestions. I love the ideas of blazers but have never bought one unless it was for a suit. Where do you even start looking for them? I am with you on chunky jewelry at work. I prefer minimal jewelry - especially on my ears and arms because they clang around on the desk while typing or on the phone while talking and that's so frustrating, I end up taking them off.

I had a closet full of blazers for work. They work over dresses, any style shirt, and look good with pants or a complementary skirt. Our office was pretty formal, but we often wore stuff on the dressier side of business casual. I prefer a blazer to a cardigan because they add some structure. Cardigans and sweater can end up kind of stretched out and frumpy looking by the end of the day in my opinion, and it can be hard to find ones with a nice drape, so I stay away from them. If your office is more casual, I'd get blazers made out of more casual materials (they make them in knits, which would be washable, and other types of cotton, like seersucker for summer), or some of the more refined-looking moto and military jacket styles. Make sure the blazers/jackets fit you well. They should look tailored, and not baggy/bulky.

I'd keep the jewelry to a minimum. Maybe it was the particular environment I was in, but big statement pieces like you see in a J. Crew catalog were not a thing there, and as a result, I don't see them as professional. Don't get me wrong, I love costume jewelry and wear it, but it has a time and place, and an office doesn't really seem like the right one, you know?

And lastly- I love banana republic sweaters. I have a few and the quality is amazing. I've had them for years and no pilling whatsoever.
http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=5032&sop=true - 40% off too!

I think nothing beats the classic button down with a v neck sweater over it. Classic and professional.
