I love when kids come up with their own names. We do call my dad "Papa" and my FIL "Grandpa". But my mom has gotten some of the best names based on what her grandkids could say. Some call her "Lodalo", others call her "Meema", and my DS calls her "Myna".

My dad was going to be grandpa but DD1 started calling him gumpy and he turned into a big ole puddle on the floor, so the name is staying. It really is ridiculously cute.

FIL was going to be papa but it has turned into poppy, which is also very cute, so that's staying too!

@LovelyPlum: Haha, neither did I. Maybe it's not officially? My FIL is from Holland and my DH called his grandpa Opa (and grandma Oma) so it must be? I don't know any Dutch though, we just let FIL pick what he wanted to be called when his first grandbaby was born.

FIL is Grampy and and my dad is Grandpa. My mom had a ton of trouble deciding what she wanted to be called. At first she wanted to be Mimi and I vetoed that because it sounds too close to mommy. She ended up with Grammy, which I still think is weird because I feel like Grammy and Grampy should go together, but Grampy is my FIL, lol.

it's more used in germany or to distinguish between the grand parents on the father's and on the mother's side
but most people don't use oma/opa.

LO doesn't talk yet, but when we talk about her grandfathers, My dad is Opa, and DH's is Pap. My FIL picked his name after his dad, and my sisters actually helped come up with my dad's name. He was really resistant to pretty much everything, but we tried Opa, and it stuck!

@singingbee: lol, for a while, my dad wanted to be called "sir." Um, no. ;)
