I could see bits of blood and scabs when I had my cracked nipples. I agree with @Thehistoryofus... Those are all great tips and what I did to help them heal.

You're also at risk of getting an infection with cracked nipples so be careful! My ob recommended bacitracin (antibiotic) and I used that after every feeding. I think my nipples took over 6 wks to heal :(

I experienced the same thing when LO was about a week old...cracking, blistering and I thought I was going to die! I called the LC from the hospital and she recommended to put a dab of hydrocortisone mixed with neosporin on them and to make sure and wash over before nursing. It helped me get through that first week HUGELY...I had tried everything else and nothing helped me to heal as fast.

thank you!! the little blood spots appear on the front - so I couldn't figure it out. I have been using lanolin and air drying, and rubbing milk on there, haven't tried the sunlight. even since yesterday it feels better, so maybe it wasn't a "full" crack because I feel like google says those are much harder to heal? they don't quite feel like cracked lips - just sore from adjusting to being sucked on all day, lol

If you are getting blood, you have a cracked nipple. They best thing I can relate it to is like cracked lips but worse.

Use some lanolin (before and after nursing), let nipples air dry and have as much open air exposure, and cover in extra breast milk. I have even heard direct sunlight can help.

So my baby is a week old today (!) and we're doing relatively well breastfeeding..some latch issues, though. My right nipple is super sore I think because she continues to eat when I have little cuts (I think). There are little blood spots that appear after she eats..but anyway.

How do I know the difference between a cracked nipple and the normal "cracks" or lines on a nipple? You can usually find just about anything on Google, and I am not finding any photos :/

I have a visiting nurse coming on Oct 15 (earliest they could fit me in) and I can't afford to go to the hospital to meet with a LC (it's $180..insurance doesn't cover). So I'm using the internet in the meantime!
