I'd wonder if they meant sexually, but for women affairs are more often about an emotional attachment.

If someone said "I had an affair", I assume sex was involved. However, emotional affairs are more damaging, for sure!

Thanks guys! I totally agree about emotional affairs being just (if not more) damaging, but I'm glad I'm not the only one that, in the absence of clarification it means sexual. Now to go gloat to my DH that most of the bees agree with me :)

I agree that an emotional affair is still an affair... but when you hear the word "affair" to most people it means sexual infidelity.

If someone had an emotional affair, I would expect them to use those words? In the absence of the word "emotional", I would assume it was a physical relationship...

When someone says affair I always assume sex. I do think there are emotional affairs and like the pp I think they can be even more damaging.

I don't assume sex is involved. You could have an emotional affair that is just as damaging (if not more) than a purely sexual one.

When I hear "affair" I think an inappropriate relationship between a married person, and another person. I definitely don't assume sex is involved. An emotional affair is just as bad, as a sexual one IMO.

^ agree. But I think if someone just says "affair" I assume there was an ongoing emotional & sexual relationship. I think having a sexual affair automatically comes from an emotional affair as opposed to "cheating" which could be a sexual occurrence only.

So there's a stupid storyline on a soap that DH and I watch (soaps are on in primetime in the UK) where the village vicar and his wife are having marital problems. The wife nearly left her husband for another man, but didn't at the last minute. The wife was telling her friend about it and said "I had an affair."
Now, this is where I need your help.
The wife and the other man never slept together. They certainly had an emotional affair and there was definitely a betrayal, but when she told her friend "I had an affair" my first reaction was "but they never slept together".

So, if a friend said to you "I had an affair", with no other elaboration, would you assume that means they had sex with someone other than their SO?
