DH and his sister are almost 3.5yrs apart, and it doesn't seem they were ever close in age or stage. So, I would say under 3 yeas, more like 2.5 and under.

@ShootingStar: This http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16622143 is the meta-analysis that tends to be most referenced regarding risks associated with different pregnancy spacings. For the purposes of their study "interpregnancy interval" was defined as the time between one live birth and the next conception.

I think the WHO's official recommendation for a minimum interval is still 24 months, but, both the metanalysis I linked to and a handful of more recent studies point to an 18 month interval having similarly good outcomes.

I'd say 2.5 years/30 months apart. That still seems really close to me given that 18 months is the ideal minimum recommended time between pregnancies. LOs less 30 months apart would mean starting to TTC right at 18 months and successfully conceiving within the first couple cycles.

About 2 years.

@Adira: The cutoffs can really change things. LO1 & LO2 will only be 8 months closer in age than LO2 & LO3 and yet, my first two will only be one year apart and the second two will be three years apart in school. So like 5th grade, 4th grade, and 1st grade at the same time. So funny how that works out!

@oliviaoblivia: That's so weird!!!

But what I meant by "two grades or more between them" was that they'd be at least three or more grades apart, so literally two grades between their grades. Like second grade and fifth grade have two grades (third and fourth) between them. Sorry if my wording was confusing!

Not more than two years (give or take a few months).

DD1 and DD2 are 22 months apart and I consider them close, although I certainly know people who have smaller age gaps.

DD2 and DD3 will be 2.5 years apart - I know that in reality, that age difference isn't too different, but it FEELS a lot bigger (perhaps because as a second child, I think DD2 acts a lot older than 26 months).
