Can you put stuff on the toast? My LO likes peanut butter, hummus, cream cheese, avocado spread thin. I’ve mashed banana onto it too.She loves carbs too and points to bread if she sees it and won’t accept anything else once she’s seen it (she’s 11 mos so no words yet) but is fine with anything on the bread basically.

@SugarMaple: that’s hard. I have a non-picky kid (which is great) who just eats super small amounts of food and still does at 3+. It boggles my mind how little my one kid survives on, but is healthy and has energy.

And my kids are weirdos who don’t like Mac and cheese. Three that in as a random aside. :)

@SugarMaple: Ah ok. My son went through a phase where and this age where he would only eat mac & cheese. Thankfully he snapped out of it randomly and now eats nearly everything. So it could be a phase. Definitely keep offering a variety of foods but just keep in mind it will pass.

@SugarMaple: sorry last thing to add. They say that kids have to try something many times before they may decide or realize they like it. It’s crazy like 10-15 times or something??? So don’t get discouraged and try again and again. Wait a week or two between foods. She may surprise you!
And keep trying variety don’t give up trying. You may stumble upon something she likes. One of my sons friends is very picky. VERY. But one day she saw him eating edamame and decided to give it a try. Now she loves it and it’s one of her staples! And it’s a healthy staple. So don’t give up!

Also I think it’s important to not offer something she’ll eat (carb or whatever) AFTER she declines what you’re eating. If anything I would include it with the meal. But if you offer her all the good stuff and she says no THEN you give her a piece of bread or cracker or whatever, she’s just going to learn to deny everything and she’ll get what she wants if she holds out. Which will really deter her from even trying.
With kids they say to have at least one thing you know they’ll eat with the meal. Rice or pasta or bread or fruit or fave veggie, or whatever. And then that’s IT. No pb sandwich or whatever as a compromise after the fact.
That’s what we do and it’s honestly worked really well. I know all kids are different and it’s a lot easier said than done. But, just sharing what I’ve read and applied and it’s actually worked.

@SweetiePie: That's a great variety! I'll try mixing in quinoa or pastina. I can sometimes sneak soft veggies into her mashed potatoes with success. After writing this out it appears my daughter just wants to have breakfast for every meal.

Much like me in my college days :)

@Mrsbells: Yes to trying it all. She won't eat pasta or chopped fruit. She will eat pancakes, waffles and applesauce. She gets everything we eat on her tray, but never wants to eat it.

@Petitduck: That's what I thought. It's probably why I am concerned.

@cake2017: I would love for her to eat that much of a variety. I'll keep putting choices on her plate and crossing my fingers. She willingly picked up a cooked carrot and piece of baby red potato yesterday at lunch and put them in her mouth. My heart leaped each time. Sadly, she spit them out and that was that. :(

My current baby is 11 months but I remember what my older son ate around 15 months and it was mostly the same.

Typical breakfast items we do: toast with thin layer of pb cut to small squares. Fruit. Yogurt. Waffle torn to pieces. Turkey or chicken sausage. Croissant. I try eggs once in a while but this kid isn’t that into it.

Typical lunch: pb toast if he didn’t have for breakfast. Leftovers from dinner night before. Turkey or chicken from the prepared foods section at a market near me. Peas. Cut up cucumber. Chickpeas. Cheese cut to tiny cubes.

Dinner: whatever we’re eating. Last week was skirt steak, baked potato, peas. Taco night (he sort of had a deconstructed taco - fave things were the meat, tomatoes, cheese). Indian delivery (baby LOVES the saag paneer and everyone loves the chicken tikka masala and rice). Did gyros one night and baby ate a bunch of gyro meat, some pita, and some tomato. I made tilapia one night with couscous and broccoli and he ate all of that too.

I’m wayyyyy more adventurous with my 2nd than my first. That’s for sure. I pretty much let him try anything and I’m surprised by how much he enjoys. Even things that are kinda spicy, he’s unphased.

I agree with mixing something to add texture to pouches. Rice or quinoa or they make tiny tiny pasta. I think it’s called pastina?

@SugarMaple: My 19 month old is still very picky. He won’t eat sandwiches, deli meat, steak, pbjs but will eat quinoa, rice, spinach, broccoli, saag(indian dish), chinese fried rice, pizza, waffles and cold pasta- all fruit... it’s all random but he eats so i stopped stressing. I’m believing he will grow his palate if I keep offering different things....
So offer a variety and maybe let Lo look and observe what you’re eating??

Thank you all for responding! I actually feel much better. I know I am letting her drink too much whole milk, which likely fills her up so she's not very hungry. I make excuses, thinking she needs some fat to develop! She's average size, maybe a little on the small side. She literally would be happy to just eat baby puffs/crunchies all day if I let her. And milk. She rarely eats lunch at daycare because it's not carb based. Doesn't seem to mind skipping it at all. Of course, if I don't work to fill her up in the evening (pushing pouches, milk, FOOD) she wakes in the night hungry. End rant.

@Petitduck: Thanks! that is helpful. I wonder how much of the bowl a standard pouch fills up? Usually she will only eat half at a time.

@Sams Mom: I will check these out. Thanks for the link!

@periwinklebee: Scary! Food allergies would make it tough. Luckily, we haven't come across any yet. But it's not like she has a wide range of food. ha. I will retry soup. Thats a great idea.

@kayla0416: Our kids need to teach each other, ha!

@2littlepumpkins: I stopped bottles on the day my son turned 1. I still give my daughter a night bottle because I can't cut the cord. It might help my cause if I do. Maybe tomorrow ;)

Haha, my almost 3 year old still loves pouches...hopefully there's not a max age! She doesn't eat a ton of them, but they're our go-to snack if we need something on-the-go, or sometimes just because she wants one!

We have kind of the opposite problem with our 13-month old. She loves table food and will eat anything you put in front of her, but she hasn't done well with the transition to whole milk. Since I quit pumping and bottle-feeding breast milk, she just doesn't drink much anymore. Not interested in whole milk, not interested in water, I've even tried juice because I thought it would good just to get her more fluids, but nope, not interested. We still do a bottle at bedtime (whole milk) because she'll kind of "sleep-drink" at that time and I can get her to drink about 4-5 ounces. She only drinks a couple ounces at each meal, and usually nothing in between, so she drinks about 10-15 ounces of liquid a day. I'm constantly worried about her fluid intake. There's always something, as a mom, right??

Hah, I literally had a nightmare last night that they put a max age on packets and LO was too old and then we couldn't get him to eat anything, if that tells you anything about our current situation (LO is almost 1).

He completely refused finger foods until 10+ months. He now loves cheerios and a handful of fruits/veggies, but not much else. He is much more willing to eat things in pureed form, and adores yogurt. Refuses cheese and pasta. Angrily refuses whole milk. He still vastly prefers bottles to food. He also has severe food allergies to quite a few common foods (had an anaphylactic reaction when we introduced sesame), so the whole food thing is stressful.

I figure he will come to it in his own time, and just keep offering diverse foods, in pureed form if necessary. Soups have been a good way to expand his palette, as there are things he'll take in soup form (i.e. broccoli soup) that he'd never take as finger food.

My son ate a ton of certain table foods, but also a TON of pouches in between our (adult) meal times. HAPPY TOT/HAPPY BABY pouches have a huge variety of ingredients, well beyond the variety my husband & I eat. He especially loved the ones with meat in them: chicken & roast vegetables, turkey veggie medley, beef & roast vegetables, salmon & I can't even remember over a year later 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’d spread stuff on the toast or crackers, like bean pates or hummus and just not worry yet. Both my kids consumed pouches beyond 1.5 and it doesn’t sound too concerning as long as she is eating a variety (even limited) of textures and flavours. Some kids won’t even touch any texture other than smooth.

Maybe try mixing something in with purées, like a bit of cooked couscous or quinoa and seeing how that is taken. A little bit at a time and build up? And if that fails you could always grind up oats or quinoa and mix it into purées.

I think they all come around in their own time, but my littlest is like this too. She's almost 13m and still taking bottles, even at night. And she is on whole milk but still vastly prefers it warm, always has from the first bottle!! But because of her issues we can't really push her off of them. So not much advice here but commiseration!

Curious. What does your 15 month old eat? How much?

I feel like I never worried about this with my first child. He just ate what we gave him (table food). My daughter is trickier. She refuses most table food apart from carbs (toast, crackers) or soft food (yogurt, applesauce). Ugh. No noodles
or veggies. I give her pureed veggies, but I feel like she should be moving on from these.

Tips?
