@SweetiePie: Today he for sure had the shortest wake time in the morning and he had 3 naps! I didn’t realize the morning wake time should be shortest.

@muffinsmuffins: it’s tough. We were down to 2 night time wakings then it all fell apart. Lately it is 4-5. Longer naps will definitely help with a schedule. We reliably get 45 min naps.

DS is not quite 6 months but we are still on 4 naps most days because he also tends to do short naps no matter the awake times we try. We are working on routines and drowsy but awake as nighttime wake ups have gotten out of control. 2-3 per night ugh. I’ve been reading some sleep training resources and we tried a bit of CIO but I think we/he isn’t ready.

Usually he wakes at like 6/6:30 and first nap is 1.5 hrs from that. Naps can range from 30 mins to 1.5 or 2 hrs, it’s all over the map. We do 2 hrs of awake time after the first nap. Bedtime is by 7pm. Today he woke at 7, napped 8:45-10:30 (amazing!), napped 12:45-2:30 (double amazing!) and 4:15-5 and will go to bed at 7. Those naps aren’t typical and we are still working on it. He throws in days of one long nap usually, but then the next he’s back to 4 45 minute naps. It’s a bit frustrating because we would love a more concrete schedule and to go reliably down to 3 naps...but bedtime at 5 or 5:30 isn’t feasible for us right now.

All the sleep training stuff has these great schedules but what if your kid is an unreliable napper?! Then it screws up the whole rest of the day.

@ALV91711: Another rule of thumb that I tried to follow is that the first period of wakefulness should be the shortest of the day. That’s why if you notice his first nap was about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes after wake up. After that I slowly made the wake time longer and longer, and hour and a half to two hours like you said. But that first stretch in the morning is still the shortest, even now at a year. We are on roughly a 2-2.5-3 schedule.

@SweetiePie: Thank you for sharing. Looks like 1.5-2 hours of awake time.

@bhbee: it’s tough being the last baby! We have to drop off and pick up big brother but should be able to work naps around it. 3 naps would be amazing! Funny enough I have no recollection of DS1’s naps and when he dropped them. Thanks for sharing the schedules, those look good.

@SweetiePie: 5:30 seems so early but we’ve been doing earlier the last couple nights and it is really nice to have the evening with DS1.

I know as soon as I get this figured out that it is all going to change again but it is nice to have something to aim for.

@SweetiePie: same ... we never regretted 5:30 bedtime and it gave me nice time with my older one. We night trained before nap training (or I should say - night fell into place much more quickly than nap) and 5:30 saved all our sanity, ds included.

@bhbee: a couple things you said reminded me.
Agree that 3 naps is good at this age. Some are on 2 but I don’t actually know any. We didn’t move to 2 naps till 8mo for my oldest and 10mo for my current baby! But he was hovering between 2-3 for a month or two.

And agree with a super early bedtime on bad nap days. It feels weird to do 5:30 bedtime but every time he still slept till 6:30.

@ALV91711: I have a 6mo but no schedule :silly: she has to deal with two school schedules/pickups and I put her down when she looks tired. I’d say 3 naps is good for that age as a general rule. I may have some schedules I stole from the internet Ill look for.

I think your night sleep sounds awesome! If he’s really overtired you could try 5:30-6 for bedtime. My ds used to need that when he didn’t nap well.

My kids were solidly on 2 naps by 7m but you may be a little in between for a while ... I feel like you get crappy sleep until the new norm. By 7m my oldest got up at 7 and slept 9:30-11 and 2:30-4 and night was 8-7 I think. My second never napped well until 1 nap due to being in the car for preschool too much!!

I have a just-turned-1yo so I remember his 6 month schedule well. My 4yo was about the same at 6 months so at least for us it’s been consistent.

6:30/7am wakeup (But we don’t get them till 7am)
8/8:15-9:30/10am Nap 1
11:15/30-1/1:30 Nap 2
3/3:30-4:30 Nap 3
6:30 Bedtime

Slept 11-12 Hours no wakeups

DS will be 6 months next week and his sleep has just fallen apart. He was pretty reliably having 4 one hour naps and 11-12 hours at night with a few wake ups. In the last week he’s barely napped and is just so overtired. Night sleep hasn’t really changed.

Typically he goes done for the night 6/6:30 and is up 11-12 hours later. His daytime wake time was at about 1.5 hours with 4 naps. Today he had exactly 1 45 minute nap.

What does sleep look like for your 6 month old? I need to re figure out were we should be.
