She is perfectly capable of using an open cup but she doesn't drink enough without a straw. He can actually drink from an open cup just fine, but he still is careless about knocking it over. At dinner he gets an IKEA kids open cup but doesn't drink a lot from it. Since it's so hot I prefer the straw cup because he sips water from that all day. Our almost 5 year old gets a cup if we're sitting at the table, but he has to drink anything in the kitchen, even if it's water. If we're out and about, he's got a thermos straw cup. Our almost 2 year old still has his thermos straw cup, but is getting better about drinking from a regular cup. He can drink out of a cup but if we leave cups accessible he likes to just walk up and tip them over so we only use cups at cafes when he is being supervised closely! She's 28 months now and does great with them. Never dropped one.
