@Thehistoryofus: canned fruit would actually bother me because most cans are lined with bpa. could you pack a lunch instead?

i think most of the daycares around here serve organic food (there is a service daycares use that delivers the food). is there another daycare close by with better food options?

@Thehistoryofus: it sounds like there is a lot of sweet stuff for breakfast. also is the fruit fresh or canned? the description makes it sound canned. i wouldn't love the tater tots, nuggets (since they're prolly not organic), and fish sticks. it's not horrible, but it could be improved!

we provide lunch so they only give snacks like apples, oranges, cheddar bunnies, graham crackers twice a day. i wish they served organic food... it would make my life easier.

My daycare lady also follows the state's plan but it leaves a LOT of wiggle room. They rarely eat meat for some reason. They eat cheese quesadillas at least 1x/week, scrambled eggs, pancakes, PB&J, and mac & cheese for lunches. All are served with fruit and/or veggie so I do feel better about it.

Is there not a menu that is provided? We get that in advance plus they write it down on our LO's daily sheet. Nothing is organic but they seem to be covering the food groups.

We are considering switching centers because I"m not too thrilled with the idea of her eating a bunch of processed food for lunch every day. At least one day of the week they serve chicken nuggets, another day is usually cheese pizza or fish sticks. There is usually only 1 or 2 "home cooked" meals like spaghetti, sloppy joes, oriental chicken, etc.

We pack Wagon Jr.'s lunch every day... provided lunch would be so AWESOME, oh man. But I guess it's a little scary that you can't be the one preparing all the food. I would probably be ok with some prepared or boxed foods a few times a week, but not every day.

I get a menu every month so I know what is served daily. It ranges from meatloaf and peas to a chicken or turkey sandwich and cucumbers to french toast. Snacks are always a variety of crackers, fruit bars, fruit slices, bagels, etc. If my son chooses not to eat what is offered they'll supplement with things like applesauce and peaches that they know he'll eat but some days are better than others.

@kiddosc: Yeah, I know he's getting vegetables and fruits, plus he gets cows milk, yogurt and cheese.

I'm just curious is the prepared foods are normal for daycare or not.

California has pretty strict feeding guidelines, so I know pretty much what DD eats during the day. If you are curious about their meals, can you just ask your daycare provider? DD has gone through a couple picky eating phases, and there's a few things she absolutely refuses to eat, so I've had many a discussion with her daycare provider about what she's eating. They do some processed foods (like peanut butter/jelly sandwiches and frozen waffles) but they also do a ton of fresh fruits/veggies (at least 4 servings a day), so I don't mind the processed stuff too much.

Our LO isn't here yet, but if she's licensed, then most states will require that she follows a food program that requires a certain balance of food groups and nutrition. Unfortunately the processed foods still fulfill these requirements, but at least he's most likely eating balanced meals

DS is 12 months now and has been working on solids for about 5 months. At first he ate purees, which I provided, but now's he is eating table food. He goes to an in-home daycare with an older woman in a rural area. She's licensed and has 5 kids total. DS is the youngest, going up to 4 years old.

She doesn't always tell me what he eats for lunch, but there is a part of me that is wondering if he's eating healthy enough food. She does make something from scratch, but I know the have a fair amount of prepared foods as well, like hot dogs or boxed mac n cheese.

I don't expect everything to be organic and homemade, especially since I don't even do that myself. DS has had a few bites of pizza, some stouffers mac n cheese, and canned fruit before, so maybe I'm just being to critical.
