@Sha: haha i hear ya.... but a "small" investment now, will pay off big time in the future, hopefully - as long as the whole healthcare doesn't change for the worse!

@tequiero21: thanks!! he's mentioned sports medicine and anesthesiology as potential add-on specialities....i'm sure in the long-term they would add value but right now i just want him to be done with residency!!

@Sha: woo hoo! july is right around the corner! and having a business degree will help him so much if he ever joins a private practice! i think lots of doctors are not aware of the business aspects and can get screwed over...

what type of specialty is he looking at? i think it's always good to have a specialty - gives him one up on other peds.

@winniebee: @tequiero21: woo-hoo! glad to hear it hopefully gets better. peds is a short residency - "only" 3 years - but we met while in business school (he did an MBA/MD) so the entire time we've been together he's either been in school or residency and i am so ready for it to be over!!! he's been starting to talk about adding another specialty and i'm trying to be supportive but omg i don't know if i can handle a residency schedule and being the breadwinner for another 3 years!!!!!!

@tequiero21: He is a bit all over the place with what he wants to do so hopefully rotations help sort things out. I'm super against a surgical residency since we'll probably have more than one kid at that time but he's also not interested since he likes his free time (I just remind him of that if he ever forgets).

@winniebee: yeah, we were down south but had to move to the mid-west for a year for his fellowship. then moved all the way to ny afterwards! what a pain! luckily, for our move to ny, we used vehicle transport and full moving company (they packed for us, which was so awesome!).

you can take the year off with the baby and see if you enjoy being a sahm. and if you can't deal, then you can go back to working again!

@tequiero21: that's awesome!! the plan is for me to at least work during the last year of residency - fellowship may be somewhere else (find out soon...) so I might take that year off with the baby and then decide what to do thereafter.

@winniebee: yup! luckily, the babies are coming at a time when i'm able to take off. if they came while he was in residency, i honestly don't know what we'd do! we definitely needed my income but the cost of having to hire a nanny or something would have been so high! not sure about all fellowships, but my hubby's was really nice. he got home at a decent hour! it's like being full-time, just a fraction of the salary haha. and just focus on that light, gf! it's beautiful!

@maysprout: time does really fly. next thing you know, your hubby will be working full-time and you can look back on how you guys survived! =) what is he planning to do? surgery is good money, gf! good life-style. unless he does anesthesiology (sp?) or radiology. those are good life-styles too.

@winniebee: @tequiero21: I'm jealous of you both. My husband is doing his MD/PhD, and is writing his PhD thesis now but then will still have to finish the last 2 years of med school before he can even start residency. Such a long time to be in school, I made him promise no surgery though if he was going the already long route.

@tequiero21: crazy! are you going to stay at home after the bambinos arrive? when our baby arrives, DH will just be starting his last year of residency...then has a 1 year fellowship (which supposedly is not bad)....then private practice. sadly, since we live in an expensive city and I'm currently the breadwinner I'll be going back to work after maternity leave. but, i can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel!

@winniebee: neurosurgeon - 4 years of med school (but he got his masters before that so he's REALLY been in school), 7 years of residency/internship/fellowship (he got off a year early from his research year and did fellowship) and finally out on his own for about a year and a half. YES! it gets better! i remember his junior year, he was living at the hospital. but now, i see his face! he's got more of a schedule, so it's really nice. although, next year, might be bad because he's going into private practice.

@tequiero21: hahaha....he rarely cooks at home. He doesn't do much cooking at work anymore either. Mostly, he manages all the other chefs and cooks-tells them what to cook, etc. and does all the administrative stuff. I tease him and tell him I can always tell when he's had to do some cooking at work because he comes home with a cut or burn.
