Not to be debbie downer-- but I agree with some of the other posters.

I've learned the hard way not to postpone things like big trips on the chance that you'd be pregnant... sadly. Hopefully, you won't have to do that!!

I would suggest that if you *really, really want to do those things* like the trip to Africa-- that you say that you're not sure it's in the budget *yet* but that you'll keep it in mind. Then don't book until you know you're not going to be pregnant during the 3 months surrounding the trip.

That way, if you get pregnant, you can use the real reason for not going ;)

Depending on where in Africa you'd be going, you may not need many vaccinations at all-- so it wouldn't hurt a teeny tiny baby-- so if you were say 2-3 months along, it would be safe.

Hubby and I are going to China in the fall, unless I'm in my 3rd trimester... we're just not booking until next month, when I *know* I'm out of the danger zone for flying!

I hope that helps!

I agree with the others. Can't afford the trip, and I would be honest with your boss if you really want to skip the project.

@eastcoaster: My doctor said to continue normal life and still take my prescription meds, etc. until I saw the positive pregnancy test. But if you don't feel comfortable drinking you can always say you have a headache, you're on a diet, etc.

I agree with everyone above re: what to say about the Africa trip and the work assignment. People get pregnant in work environments and when you do, your project will just have to be handled by someone else!

I have a similar question---what do you tell people who want to go out drinking, etc. but you don't want to tell them you're TTC? Or even during the TWW, is it harmful to have a couple drinks, if you don't even know if your pregnant yet?

Pregnancy is so uncertain -- it's not like you can look into a crystal ball and know when you'll conceive and give birth! -- so I really I wouldn't pass on opportunities just because I was TTC. It took us three years to get pregnant, and I can't imagine putting my entire life on hold for three years.

That said, if you're truly not wanting to go on vacation or take this job opportunity, you can tell your friends + boss that you politely decline their invitations. If they press for further information, you can divulge a little and tell them that a personal and private possibility is first and foremost for your family.

Good luck! xo

Thank you for the advice!

It's just difficult because these are things that DH and I would normally jump at, but we have to rethink because we're practical and don't want to commit to anything that we may not be able to follow through with.

As for the work project, it's not just April that I would be worried about. It will include a lot of long nights, weekends, and travel for the next year, not something that I am interested in if I am even in the early stages of being pregnant or even TTC. The stress alone of this program would most likely affect our TTC. I really don't think I want to commit to something that important when I may not be able to give it 100%.

Does anyone else have experience with having to turn things down because they are TTC or hoping to be pregnant when it occurs?

I also agree that you shouldn't pass up the work opportunity. There's no guarantee you'll get pregnant right away for a number of reasons so I don't think it's worth turning down the opportunity. TTC can be frustrating enough on it's own that you don't want to put everything else in your life on hold waiting for this one thing to happen.

I agree with MediaGirl. For the Africa trip just say it's not in the budget. But I wouldn't pass on the work opportunity. You never know how long it will take you to get pregnant, and I don't think you should live your life based on the "what if". Don't start really accounting for it until you're actually pregnant. If you take the project and it turns out you won't be around in April 2013, you'll have plenty of notice to transition someone else to jump in and lead.

I don't think I would put off doing things because you're going to TTC. I would tell my friends that we can't go on the Africa trip because of all of the immunizations and such you need to go there. Just tell them that you can't afford it. As for work, I would go for the project. If you get pregnant, someone else can always take over, right? Well, I'm sure they would have to, your company would have no other choice. Not like you can work while you're giving birth. :)

For example one, you could always say it's just not in the budget right now. Cite car trouble, house work, looking to buy, looking to move, etc.

Example 2 - could you be honest with him? I don't think it's entirely uncommon for adults to want to start families, and if you're protected by the law (assuming your company is big enough, etc) s/he can't fire you for thinking of babies, no?

eta - your boss might appreciate the heads up and choose someone else, or say that you do the best work and they'll have someone else fill-in in April? you never know!

Hi Bees! I'm looking for some excuses to add to my arsenal as to why I can't do certain things because we're going to start TTC next month (and we're not telling many people about).

Example 1: A friend just sent us a link to a trip they want to book for February to Africa and want us to come along. We've traveled with them a lot, usually in February, so I'm having a hard time coming up with a good excuse on why we can't book.

Example 2: My boss asked me if I'm interested in heading a project that calumniates with a big, labor intensive event in April 2013, when I'm hoping to be either very pregnant or on maternity leave. I feel bad taking on the project when I will (hopefully) have to transition it close to the event. I'd rather someone else take it. Passing wouldn't negatively affect my career in any way, but I can't think of a good reason to tell him why I want to pass.

Has anyone else had to give excuses for not participating in things because they were TTC? What did you say??
