Pork and sauerkraut! It's what we always eat for luck in the new year. This year, I made potato and sauerkraut latkes with applesauce on top. Yum!

Usually we have pork and sauerkraut on New Years Day with my extended family, but this year our family dinner got pushed to this Saturday. This morning I made cheese and blueberry crepes, and tonight I am making stuffed pig stomach.

@BananaPancakes: I've never made it but the Pioneer Woman had a recipe in her cookbook!

This recipe, if you decide you want black eyes peas, is delicious though! http://m.cookeatshare.com/recipes/texas-two-bean-soup-443824#CES it's Texas two bean soul from Moosewood. It's vegan (until you add the cheese!) and even my DH loves it! Definitely add the corn, and mix a little like juice with the sourcream. Delicious.

@MrsH: Just what @lovehoneybee said, though sometimes we eat them with collard greens instead of cabbage. I actually hate the entire meal, which is why I'm not superstitious about missing it. I try to avoid the whole thing. Ha ha.

So to answer your question, I do not think its yummy. Oh, and you're also supposed to leave at least one pea left on your plate or its considered bad luck. We love our superstitions in the south.

@MrsH: It's a black-eyed peas and rice dish. Southern tradition that eating it on New Year's Day will bring prosperity and good luck in the new year (the peas are supposed to represent coins).

A lot of people I know serve it with greens (cabbage in my family) to represent money, and corn bread, which represents gold. I usually cook it with a ham hock but couldn't find one yesterday so I'm using bacon instead.
