I go to PV almost every year on vacation and have never been sick. Casa Velas is a really nice hotel so I wouldn't be too concerned about the food there. Stay hydrated, stick to bottled water (even for brushing teeth) and don't purchase street food/beverages and I'm sure you'll be fine! Have a great time on your vacation!!

@coopsmama: it was fun. The formal restaurant is extremely slow... Plan for dinner taking a long time. We generally preferred eating at the casual one for that reason since we had our LO with us. She went bonkers the night dinner took hours.

For breakfast the precooked was kind of meh but the cook to order eggs were always good. For lunch, I *loved* the fajitas. That was seriously the best thing I ate all week! The resort tries to do all these theme nights but their Mexican food is the best out of all the cuisines.

Our friends enjoyed the various activities that were planned. We didn't really get to do any of them because we had nap times and stuff but things like Aquafit looked fun.

Btw if they have a problem with their room, definitely complain and try to get moved. Some of our friends had issues with their rooms and got upgraded to better views, etc.

Have a great vacation and hope your parents do too!

@Ms.Pumpkin: you know what I was thinking is that it can be so mental! Not to get all woo woo but the people I know who are most cautious and paranoid are the ones who always get sick! So in that sense the bottled water may have a placebo effect :)

I have traveled around the world in many developing countries where the risk of foodborne illness is high (India, Cambodia, Indonesia, Morocco, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania and others) and I have NEVER gotten sick except for a terrible month-long ordeal resulting from one innocent afternoon in Sayulita, Mexico (north of PV). I had a limonata (no ice) at a nice bar (where all our friends had Coronas) and ended up with a flagellate GI tract parasite that had me down for the count for about a month. A week suffering through the rest of my vacation, two weeks after we got home to get it diagnosed (rounds of antibiotics didn't touch it, as that's the wrong mechanism for this sort of bug), and a week of taking a CRAZY awful pill to kill the bugs. The remedy was almost worse than the affliction.

That is all by way of saying, DO NOT DRINK ANY FRUIT JUICES. Limonota and other juices can be cut with water, and if that water is not clean, you end up where I did. Even from a nice popular tourist bar. And I thought I was being safe by avoiding the ice. There is no way you could while pregnant take the hard-core drug I had to take to get rid of the parasite, and I'm sure the parasite would be no bueno for baby either.

I'd also follow the other typical rules of avoiding ice, any vegetables that haven't been cooked, and any fruits you didn't peel yourself (and avoid unpeelable fruits like strawberries altogether), and don't brush your teeth with the tap water.

Enjoy your trip!!!

@sunny: how did you like Velas Vallarta? My parents are headed there in March for a week. We went with Casa Velas because the adults only aspect appealed to us for this particular trip! :)

@locavore_mama: oooh that's a good one I never would have thought of!

@PinkElephant: that's actually a great point! I can feel baby move. I just can't help but be nervous since it's my first time out of the US while pregnant. (yes, I was also a paranoid mama with my first pregnancy while eating out here in the states ;))

I probably wouldn't avoid much, other than tap water. I tend not to be super overly cautious about that kind of stuff in general though. I'm generally more afraid of hotel food/airline food than of street food.

If you're avoiding ice, don't forget that this may also mean frozen/slushy drinks (outside the hotel...as others have said, I'm sure within your hotel complex, they're using purified water for the ice/drinks).

Can you feel the baby move yet? I've traveled a lot in both of my pregnancies and found I felt a lot less worried about what I was eating and doing as long as I could feel some kicks! :)

Hola from Mexico! I think you should be fine with pretty much everything at your hotel including ice and produce. Decent hotels and restaurants disinfect produce with an iodine solution which kills all the bad stuff. If you want to be super duper careful you might avoid strawberries which can be hard to clean with all those nooks and crannies. Have fun!

I think the main issues are related to water- avoid ice cubes, because even if your water is bottled, often the water for ice is just plain old tap water. Same for salads and cut fruits- they'll wash the veggies in tap water, and you can sometimes get bugs that way.

I wouldn't worry at all about fruits & veg that you peel yourself- oranges, bananas, avocados etc. If you feel comfortable, sometimes when traveling I would take non-peeling fruit (like an apple), and wash it with bottled water, just as a precaution.

Also, it's hard to break the habit, but I'd get so mad when I was good about bottled water all day, then I'd unthinkingly put my toothbrush under the tap! So annoying!

DH and I are headed for a little getaway to Puerto Vallarta. I've been to PV 2x before and other parts of Mexico another 2x and have never been sick from the food, but am a little more nervous this go around what with being 20 weeks pregnant.

Obviously I'll be sticking with bottled water, but does anyone have any suggestions for other foods to avoid? Should I be even more careful than I normally am and not eat salads, cut fruits, etc?

If you've been to Mexico while pregnant -- what did you do on the food front?

Eta -- we will be staying at a really nice, luxury resort and eating most of our meals there. Perhaps just one or two outside the resort.
