For lunch I would have ravioli, ramen (from the package), Vienna sausages with mustard, or a sandwich.

My stepmom made us cinnamon toast for breakfast a lot.

My dad did most of the cooking, but we got take out a lot. There weren't a lot of options in our small town. I still love going to the Huddle House because we went there once a month.

My mom made a couple things that stick out to me. One is SOS (S#*! on a Shingle). It's ground beef cooked with cream of mushroom soup and served over bread. Another is hamburger casserole. It is layered ground beef, mashed potatoes, northern beans, and cheese.

Something my grandmother made that I loved were Ho Cakes. That is cornbread fried in a pan in the size of mini pancakes.

I didn't realize it growing up, but my mom's not a very good cook. Everything's pretty bland. It's a reflection of when/where she grew up. She makes a mean roast chicken and mashed potatoes with stuffing, stuffed peppers and beef vegetable soup. Her chicken soup is good too.

There are several recipes of my grandmas that don't taste right until you add a squirt of ketchup.

We ate a mainly Mediterranean diet growing up, lots of pasta, fish, sauces, greens, olives, etc. I thought casseroles and meatloaves were made up for tv until I was a lot older! My husband grew up on a more classic American diet so now I can make a mean casserole and meatloaf even though I never ever thought I would.

Goulash, tator tot casserole, kringle, apple pie, tuna casserole, French bread pizza, macaroni salad, potato salad, okonomiyaki, gyoza, tempura ... my mom is a good cook. She mostly made western food but on special occasions she would make Japanese food.

I used to eat uncooked ramen too, in college. Along with Mac and cheese, cup a soup..... anything you can make with just a hot pot.

My moms such a fantastic cook and she's only gotten better. It's great. We grew up on just normal food but a lot of macaroni and hot dogs, tater tots and frozen pizza cause my parents got us babysitters a lot. One of my fav meals from growing up was cream tuna on toast. So good!

when i was little, sometimes for a treat in the summer my mom would make us sliced strawberries in a bowl with milk poured over the top and a sprinkle of powdered sugar. we loved it! also, i got "brown sugar toast" on special occasions; it's just a piece of bread, toasted, spread with margarine and brown sugar sprinkled on top. our actual meals were always pretty simple (chicken & a veggie, big salads, soup & crackers, etc.), but my mom is the queen of appetizers.

@kakimochi Ah! you just reminded me of the english muffin pizzas I used to make in the toaster oven. Tomato sauce, pre-shredded mozz, and either peperoni or mushrooms..

And I like the idea of sharing family recipes, so here's our beef and onions...or in other words:

*bistek*
chuck roast
mushroom soy sauce
soy sauce
lemon
water
black pepper

onions

Slice the chuck roast into thin strips. (Always the cheapest, most flavorful cut of beef, as this isn't a recipe for rib-eye). Make a marinade using the mushroom soy, soy sauce, and lemon. I don't have measurements, but it's mostly mushroom soy, a little soy sauce, and quite a bit of lemon juice. Dilute with some water until it's only as salty as a finished soup. The total amount of marinade shouldn't be that much liquid, think of it like an over-dressed salad....definitely not swimming in liquid. Let the beef sit in the marinade for at least 30 min and up to a few hours. Put the whole thing into a skillet and bring to a boil. Turn the heat down to a simmer and cook until the meat is tender and cooked through, 15-20 minutes. Chewy is good!

When the meat is to where you like it, take it out of the sauce, and reserve. Reduce the sauce down over high heat until it tastes good. Reserve.

Slice the onions into rings. In a new skillet, add some vegetable oil. Over med-hi heat, sautee the onion rings until they are no longer "raw-onion" tasting, but pull them out before they go soft. Crunchy and cooked is the goal, and you have to pay attention to get it. Reserve.

In the same skillet, sautee the reserved beef until it browns and gets a nice crust. Do it in multiple batches if you need to so as not to crowd the pan. When all of the beef is done, throw the onions back into the pan, and add the sauce. Let it bubble just to meld for a minute or so and serve with tons of steamed white rice!

lots of home made chinese dishes--steamed fish, stir fried leafy greens with garlic, fish soup, vegetable soup (winter melon, bird's nest), tofu and ground pork stew, porridge, ginger chicken, won tun and noodles, sigh things that I would give my mom a hard time about sometimes because I wanted "american" food--spaghetti and tacos.

snacks i'd make--ham and american cheese cigars, scrambled egg sandwiches, marinated artichokes out of the jar, my version of "pizza" (white bread toasted with ketchup, and american cheese), spam musubis (rice balls, if you're from hawaii, you know what i'm talking about).

@pepper, I ate those uncooked ramen noodles too, with the package of seasoning heaped on--so bad.

My mom always made beef chili with kidney beans, spaghetti with olive oil and chicken, cornflake chicken, pork chops...

For snacks, I always had chips and cheese (tostito chips with American cheese in the microwave haha), frozen grapes, pizza bagels... Drawing a blank on the rest!

When I was in college I used to eat uncooked ramen noodles, hahaha. You know the cheap packages that looked like a brick? I'd eat those out of the package. Don't ask me why!

My mom makes spaghetti sauce from scratch from the family recipe passed down by the Italian maid/nanny my grandma hired when they lived in Italy after WW2. It’s amazing.

Homemade mac and cheese (no Velveeta or fake cheese)

This dish my mom called “Potato Junk”. It was just layers of ground beef, thinly sliced potatoes, chunks of tomatoes and onions all baked in a casserole dish. Very few spices, very 1950’s American. I used to complain whenever it was potato-junk-night; but sometimes I still crave it.

Fig Newtons: YUK. We were not allowed to have sugary cereals or sugary cookies very often growing up so when we would ask for cookies my mom would always fake us out and only buy fig newtons. She loved them, everyone (including my dad) hated them. I still hate them to this day.

Meals were always really plain at our house - meat and two veg as we call it, here. So we'd have roast chicken or pork steaks or some other plainly cooked meat with boiled potatoes (sometimes mashes potatoes) and, maybe, cabbage and carrots to peas or broccoli. This was always served with gravy. Neither of my parents like garlic or spices - they wouldn't eat pasta dishes or anything like that.

Food I would cook for myself - well, my mum used to buy in boxes of"micro-chips" or "micro-pizzas". They were pretty disgusting but I could get them out of the freezer and microwave them if I was hungry. Not good!

DH and I don't eat like this at all! We love garlic and spices and interesting food!
