Have you tried doing a Dream Feed? Nine months may seem late to start, but I wonder if that would help break the habit?
Dreamfeeds were the ONLY way we got our twins to STTN. I usually snuck in around 9:30 or 10 and gave them 4-5oz...never even took them out of the swaddle, and they slept right through it.
Dreamfeeding initially got us to about 2-3am, but after about a month, we had a magical week where they suddenly started extending their sleep. One night, we got to 3:30, (we thought we had died and gone to heaven), then the next night it was 4, then 4:30, etc.
We dropped the DF's gradually and have never looked back. There are still tough nights here and there, but I don't miss those 12:30/2:30/4:30 wake up calls!
GL Mama!

Just wanted to update: things are looking more positive today. DD only woke up once to eat last night (3:30) and then went back to sleep until 7. She then napped for an hour and a half this morning. This afternoon's nap isn't going as well (woke after 45 minutes, cried intermittently for 15 minutes, may or may not be sleeping again now....I can't fully tell).

Anyhow, I'm feeling a little better today and hoping this is the beginning of a less exhausting phase.

Thank you all for your support and suggestions...I'll let you know if it all goes to hell again and I need more help

We didn't have a 9 month regression but the 13 months one just kicked my ass so hard. His first cold + walking + bottle weaning + visitors + transitioning to one nap = almost TWO MONTHS of sleep hell. My point being, aside from possibly scaring the crap out of you, is that it passes even when you think your kid will never sleep well again. We are now on 12 hour nights and one non-crying two hour nap. Good luck to you mama!

@JoJoGirl: Thanks! These babies and all their darn phases! I would be totally okay with one wakeup a night. Three? Not so much, particularly at almost 9 months old!

@heartonastring: I can definitely relate. Dd doesn't always sleep well with a but goes through periods where she does, and thn when the phase is over she goes back in her room. (She's been in her room since about three months as well! Tbh I don't like cosleepinhor room sharing.) I agree with you about it being the perfect storm in terms of sleep. When the cold goes away it'll probably get at least a little better!

oh NO!! I'm so sorry!!! We like you had 1-2 weeks of 7-5:30, back to sleep til 7:30, then it disappeared. We're still only at 1 waking/night, but it's back to 3-4am. Hope this ends soon for you!

We also had a 9 month period where sleep got suckier...ten it got a little better but didn't really improve until closer to 1/13 months. I would def try to eliminate that earliest wake as soon as she's over the cold (or maybe she'll drop it on her own again!). These babies--always switching things up on us.

@heartonastring: poor mama. you must be exhausted! we CIO for the first wake up (lasted 45 minutes) and that seemed to do the trick...i.e. she didn't wake up any other times after that first CIO. but, she was what i considered STTN consistently for 2 months prior to that (similar to your LO 7:30-5:45), so its kind of like she remembered "oh yeah, sleep IS great!" good luck tonight!

@Kemma: I know. I keep telling myself this. She mastered crawling (well, her version thereof) this week and is being more consistently successful in her efforts to pull up. She still doesn't have any teeth so I know that's looming on the horizon too. All that plus a cold = the perfect sleep storm! I think.

@californiadreams: I try to remember that it will pass and one day I will sleep again...it's just hard when you're in the thick of it. Logically, I know this is such a short period in my life. It would suck less if I wasn't such an irrationally angry beast while sleep deprived!

@SleepyMonkey: Yeah, last Saturday night (a week ago) we were up with her for FOUR hours straight (2-6 am)! That has NEVER happened before and it was brutal. There was another night this week when I was up with her for an hour and 45 minutes.

So, it's been a week now and I'm going to try CIO tonight and see how it goes. If it's a total failure I will give it a few more days and try again. When you re-sleep trained, did you CIO for every wake up? I'm thinking of letting her CIO for every wakeup before a certain time (maybe 2 or 3?).

we went thru the 9 month regression. it lasted a week (while we were on vacation) and it was horrible. she would wake up 2-3x/ night and be up for 1+ hours in the middle of the night. one night she was up 3 hours from 2-5am. ugh. after we got back from vacation, we decided to CIO again (we had done it at 6.5 months to night wean) and it worked. so i'd give it a week or so, and then try CIO again if you are up for it.

it will get better! this too shall pass! I never sleep trained and went through all sorts of "regressions' until 13 months. the only reason we decided to sleep train at all at 13 months (and did a very modified version - basically what we were comfortable, which was like 5-10 mins of non-hysterical crying) was because LO was getting about 7 hours of sleep a night and skipping naps!!! it was worse for him than it was for us, so we decided to do something about it.

before that i always held onto the mantra that it was a phase and sleep always changes in babies. and it still does. my LO on average now sleeps 12 hours straight a night (at 14 months) but still has nights with the occasional wake up, and naps are still a challenge.

Sooo much developmental stuff going on at this age - teething, crawling, separation anxiety, babbling - that it's no wonder sleep goes haywire!

Does she sleep in her own room? DD would sleep ok the first half of the night then be up, up, up around 2 at that time. Eventually we figured out that she would go down in the pack n play next to us (which is where we are recently too...) She passed the stage on her own and was back in her own crib (unless sick or something) til we recently moved.

I feel like I am about to lose my effing mind.

I feel like DD has never recovered from the four month regression. Prior to that she STTN and since then it's been 1-2 wakeups a night, usually just one. I would say that in her whole life, there have been less than 10 occasions when she's woken up three times/night...three of which have occurred in the last week.

Before Christmas, we did some light sleep training to eliminate an early wakeup (11 pm-ish) that arose after a minor cold early in December. She CIOed two nights an then that wakeup ceased. She still woke up 1x/ night, around 3 or 4, to nurse and I was okay with that. Right after Christmas I bumped her solids up to 3x/day and she instantly started sleeping 7:30-5:30, nursing, then going back down until 7:45. It was glorious and I thought we'd reached some golden age of sleep.

Yeah, it lasted one week.

She got another cold and this past week has been possibly the worse sleep week of her life. Her cold is gone for the most part now, but the shitty sleep remains and I am beside myself. Last night she was up at 12:30, 2 and 6:30. There is absolutely no reason for her to need to eat that frequently! Then she only napped for 30 minutes this morning. WTF?????

I am about to lose my mind. Planning to CIO again tonight.

Did you LO go through a nine month regression? How did you handle it?

I feel like , at the moment, I am a terrible wife and a not-very-good mother. I'm moody, irritable and resentful. Please tell me this will get better.
