@Ash: jealous! Wish we had enough room to do this!

We just keep a ton of frozen fruit for DH's paleo "cereal" and I'll stick up on frozen chicken or fibs when on sale. Does my milk stash count? :)

We get a 1/4 cow and a 1/2 pig every year.... which each have their own freezer. Plus, I usually stock up on frozen veggies and chicken when it's on sale. We have our regular fridge/freezer, an extra fridge/freezer combo downstairs, and 2 extra deep freezers.

We have a smallish freezer, so I can't really buy in bulk. But I always have several bags of spinach, peas and blueberries.

@yoursilverlining @ mrsbrewer - I am trying to talk DH into doing this, but we don't have a large freezer so there is nowhere to store it.

My parents would usually go in with a group at our local fair and purchase a cow or pig that was raised and shown at the fair by a local kid. Good, relatively cheap meat, and supporting local kids raising money for college - what could be better?

@Bao: oh gosh no, pasta sauce is EASY to make!!!! Don't be intimidated! We make both tomato sauce and pesto sauce and both are minimal ingredients. We don’t really have recipes, because we’ve been doing this for years, but there are plenty of recipes online. I think one thing that is important is to use quality ingredients – good olive oil, good parmesan cheese etc. Especially with pesto, it makes the difference. Pesto though, is just garlic, olive oil, basil leaves, parmesan cheese, pine nuts and a bit of salt and pepper. Run everything through a food processor or blender (you can also chop by hand) and bam – you’ve got homemade sauce! You can always add in more of whatever you like (for me, garlic!), and less of what you don't.

@MrsBrewer: Yes, the price upfront is sometimes like “whoa”, but then when you break it down its amazing! We get house-cured bacon and homemade sausage with our pig cuts, for about $3/lb for everything, overall. House cured bacon is between $7-$15/lb. at our local grocer and farmers market, so yeah, it works out nicely!

@yoursilverlining: Yes!!! Sooo much cheaper! I think we ended up paying $2/lb. And we got all different cuts, we got soo much ground beef (I use that the most) tons of steaks, roasts, burger patties! Plus I love it because I know that the cows are raised and treated very well, they are all grass fed, and allowed to roam over their entire property! No hormones or anything :-)

@MrsBrewer: We buy portions of a cow and a pig, too! Much cheaper than buying meat by the cut at the market, and from a local farm so win!

Other than that, mostly berries that I pick in season and freeze for winter consumption.

I don't buy many frozen veggies outside of peas because I dislike the flavor and texture of most reheated frozen veggies.

I also make pasta sauces from scratch and freeze those as well.

Just beef. We get an 1/8 of a cow every year from my husbands uncle. He has a farm, and slaughters 2-3 cows every winter. Then he asks the family who wants meat! An 1/8 of the cow normally lasts us all year too! :-)

I make a lot of meals and put them in our chest freezer. Every time I make a recipe that freezes well, I make two! Pasta sauce, enchiladas, quiche, meatballs, casseroles, etc.

I like frozen vegetables like peas, corn and spinach. Especially spinach. It's always on sale at my grocery store so I stock up whenever I can. And I buy bulk meat to freeze.

And not something I buy, but every few months I make up, portion out and freeze a big pot of pasta sauce. And meatballs. Also I make and freeze some baked goods like pancakes and applesauce oatmeal muffins.

ETA: I don't have a separate freezer. SO has promised me one when we're in a bigger place, but for now we don't have the space. My freezer isn't very big, but I shove in what I can, lol.

We have a very small freezer that's attached to our fridge, but we are hoping this tax season to buy a small chest freezer so we can stock up on things on sale, meat and put pumped milk in there.

What kinds of frozen food do you usually buy in bulk? Do you have an extra freezer or is your regular freezer large enough to hold a lot?
