@redsmarties: gotcha! Was just checking! :) I had a specific one on mind too and would probably only have borrowed that one, so I know what you mean.

@redsmarties: We borrowed an infant car seat. Her son only used it for 5 months, I knew it hadn't been in an accident, and they didn't wash the straps, etc.

@78h2o: Oh, no reason in particular. If they're good friends that you trust, and know that they'll be up front if anything were to happen, then go for it! For us, we just knew what specific carseat we wanted, so we bought our own. We also didn't have anyone offer to lend us one, so that might have skewed my view. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with it at all.

@redsmarties: why no carseat? As long as its a good friend that you trust would tell you if it had ever been in an accident, and it was a newer model, I'd be fine with itI am wary about safety items too, but I think it would be ok if I knew the friend well. Heck, our friends are using our Britax infant carseat and bases right now. I know they would tell us if anything happened. Is there another reason I'm not thinking of?

I'd borrow everything possible and then return any duplicates you get at your showers for diapers. I'd borrow carseat, boppy, bumbo, exercise mat, toys, bottles, swaddles, clothes, tub, swing, bouncer, Jumperoo, etc.

I wouldn't borrow a crib or pack n play unless it was a really recent model.

Swing, exersaucer, bumbo.... all the big bulky items are nice to borrow and then GIVE BACK (or to another friend) for their next baby! :-)

I would say borrow anything you can! A swing, bouncer, jumparoo, baby gym, bumbo, co-sleeper or bassinet, clothes - anything! I would only maybe be somewhat hesitant about a breastpump but it sounds like you are trying to get one through insurance. All these items are helpful with a newborn but the baby outgrows them so fast! Maybe ask her which items worked best for her of if she has things you can borrow that you hadn't thought of?

Thanks for the great input! I've definitely added a few things to my list!

@MUI831: @LuLu Mom: @NurseMommy: I don't think I'd mind borrowing a pump, but I'm hoping to be able to get a new one from insurance for minimal cost, and then I'll be able to use if for future LOs too.

Moses basket or rock n play, Swing, bouncer, jumperoo, sling, playmat/gym...Chances are she'll still be using her bigger carrier like an Ergo at 1. Oh and a baby bath, and if you live in an urban area (and don't have a car), maybe even her infant car seat.

We borrowed almost everything, but some of the best things to not have to buy are a Moby, swing, clothes, toys... Things that you will only use for a few months.

we are borrowing a bath tub, bumbo, bouncy chair, diaper pail, breast friend feeding pillow. all things that were not used too much, and if they were used we felt we could easily clean and sanitize them, or wash the covers, etc.

My LO is only 2 months old, so I might be missing some things that don't come up until later, but I'd have loved it if we could have borrowed a bassinet, bouncy chair and/or swing, nursing pillow (Boppy or My Brest Friend) and little tub (i.e. Puj or similar). Clothes, for sure -- basic sleepers and onesies are really all you need for the first few months, and they grow out of the littlest sizes SO FAST. Basically, I'd say anything you want to try out but aren't sure the baby will like, and anything that will only get used for a short time are prime candidates for borrowing!

swing, bouncer, exercauser, bumbo, boppy (never used it). My sister is using also using my pump right now, she just bought all new hoses/parts for it, didn't bother me at all.

Personally, I would borrow anything that you can as long as it can be cleaned/sterilized. I know that you are not supposed to borrow breastpumps as they are single user. However, I'll admit that I did take my friend's medela pump as I know and trust her. I just bought all new tubing and parts for it.

I have a friend whose second child will be 1 when our LO is born. She has generously offered to let us borrow some of her gear. What would you recommend we borrow (e.g. bouncer, clothes) and what is better if we buy ourselves (e.g. breast pump)? Thanks!
