I always pack one carry on for all of us. Inside I have full set of extra clothes for us all. And if we are going to a place like Hawaii, then swim suits for us all and pairs of sandals. I figure if something happens to our luggage it doesn't have to stop us from hitting the beach, lol. Then, I usually have a large bag I carry with sweaters for us all, snacks, entertainment for us all (books, toys, tablets, coloring stuff, etc), chargers, a little container with medications, and that's where I'll also put a couple of diapers and a pack of wipes.

I carry a small crossbody bag that I don't take off during the flight. In there, I have a pen, a folding comb, lip balm, my passport, travel documents, other ID, credit cards, cash, my phone, a backup charger, pair of earbuds, a pill case and a travel pack of wipes.

In my regular carryon, I bring a small bag for garbage, a foldable shopping bag to quickly pack up whatever might have come out during the flight that I don't want to puzzle back into my son's or husband's carryon, a ziplock bag of solid snacks, a refillable water bottle, a magazine, kindle with a few shows downloaded and wetbag with a 2 pairs of underwear, wipes and 2 burp cloths (I love these for when we go places and they're out of paper or have the air dryers!).

Thank you everyone, this is really helpful!
@lamariniere: I really like the idea of a family bag plus a small bag for me, that might be a good option for this trip. We will eat during our layover or at least bring food on board but I know we need something for later in the flight. My daughter and I are highly unlikely to eat the airplane good so I'm concerned about packing enough food (I'm pregnant and have hg which is much milder now but I still can't stomach a lot of things.)

These days, my kids each get their own little backpack with toys, activities, snacks, headphones, etc.

I try to keep my carry on tote for me only. I take: wallet, passports, phone + charger + headphones, small makeup bag (with lip gloss, travel sickness meds, gum, hair ties, little necessities), a scarf or sweater depending on the season, and then usually my iPad for my LOs to use, and book or magazine for me. I don't like to read on devices, I prefer paper.

For long haul flights we have a second weekend bag size carry on that goes in the overhead bin. I add neck pillows, AA blankets for LOs, a change of clothes for everyone, toiletries, extra snacks, camera, and maybe a second book or magazine.

Change of shirt when traveling with the kids. They always spill on something on me. Cell charger, phone. I usually bring a book or something but I've yet to get a chance to read.

As little as possible! Basic makeup and my skin stuff (it all fits in a quart sized bag with room to spare - I only take the bare necessities in my carry-on, not all stuff I'll use on vacation), extra pair of underwear, lip balm, wallet, phone/charger, kindle and/or book, ear buds, sunglasses...that's about it.

@Cole: I have bad luck with airlines losing my checked luggage, so I always pack a change of clothes, extra underwear, basic toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrush, razor, deodorant, basic makeup), swimsuit and coverup, charger for tablet/phone, change of clothes for LO, and extra snacks. It sounds like a lot, but it packs up small and I always feel better safe than sorry.

If I am checking a bag my carry on has a change of clothes, bathing suit (if going somewhere warm), some basic toiletries, a snack, empty water bottle, scarf (that doubles as light blanket), kindle, and phone charger.

Then I use a cross body bag as my personal item with all of my normal purse things.

For myself I usually pack my iPad, iPad charger, phone charger, a change of clothes, my glasses, a contact case with solution, snacks, an empty water bottle, over-the-counter medicines that I might want (Advil/Tylenol and Pepto/Tums), chapstick, ear buds, wallet, travel docs, and my travel neck pillow (I usually clip this to the outside of my bag).

I think that is about it. I use my Vera Bradley Weekender bag as my carryon.

@Mrs. Microscope: I'm impressed! I admit I've made a list and there's not much on it but I swear it balloons when I actually pack it! I think baby gear winds up taking up so much room though, been a blanket, diapers, wipes and the ergo that's a full bag! I may pack a reusable shopping bag or similar to stuff the ergo and anything else we don't need during the flight into.

My kindle (to read if DD naps or is watching a movie on her kindle), my massage ball for sore pregnancy back, a granola bar, a water bottle, chapstick, wallet and travel documents, a light sweater. Phone and phone charger. So, not much!

We are traveling to Hawaii which is a 12 hour flight for us. I will pack a skip hop backpack for my 2 year old with her toys a couple of her snacks and (empty) water bottle.

I am a notorious over packer but I don't want to be schlepping an over packed bag. I can load my husband with some stuff but the bag he prefers to carry isn't huge. We have a two hour layover to think about as well. Any tips for keeping it to a minimum?
