Can't believe I forgot to mention this: my doc said the hole in my uterus was way too small to cause any problems with fertility or pregnancy in the future. We are probably done having kids but that was good to know in case we change our minds. Also where the IUD wound up meant no damage to any other organs. I go back in one month for a post-op appointment and they want to see me another 2 months after that to chat about how the pill is going for me.

@Corduroy: It was not difficult for me as I still had paid time off for 2016 so I used vacation time. My work has a pretty generous (by US standards) amount of vacation days and since my maternity leave started at the end of 2015 and only went a little bit into 2016, I had "extra". So I'm being paid for this week but at most places in the US, it would be much harder to get the time off. It is still adding to my stress because there won't be much vacation time left for all of 2016 and we have some important events out of town (I'm in a wedding on the other side of the country and my mom is turning 60 and we wanted to take a trip to commentate it.)

@Mrs Panda: I would definitely call your OB. I hope it's nothing because this really sucks but better to know and get it fixed.

I'm currently considering whether to call my OB about my mirena. I had it inserted awhile ago - last May. My period went away about two months later. But then, starting in December I randomly started having intermittent bleeding and now, starting a few days ago, I've been bleeding pretty heavily. I had some off and on sharp pain all day Saturday but then it went away. If it's just my stupid period coming back for some reason, I'd feel pretty dumb about going in, but it seems a little weird.

@Finfan: I'm sorry, what a rough experience. Since you're sharing, can I ask, was it difficult to get more time off work after maternity leave? I always wondered what happens to all the people that have emergencies after using FMLA (assuming you're in the US and covered). I hope that wasn't adding to your pain.

@Bibliolove: Doc said it probably happened during insertion and was probably provider error. I'm sure the fact that I gave birth not too long ago didn't help matters either. She said breastfeeding is associated with more IUD problems but that would not be a factor for me because we have bottle fed from birth.

I loved my first Mirena, placed 8 weeks after I had my first baby. I'm not even sure that I would warn friends or family off the IUD as it is an extraordinarily rare experience. But when it goes wrong, it really goes wrong. P

I am so sorry you had to go thru all of this. Stories like this are why I passed on IUDs as a whole. Plus we weren't looking to prevent for too long.

I'm so sorry that happened to you and glad you're ok. You're the 3rd person I know who this has happened to-- I won't get an IUD because of it (we've now taken other measures anyway). So scary!

Thanks for sharing your experience! This happened to my sister as well and is the biggest reason I am fearful of getting an IUD. I think I'll stick to taking the pill for now.

I had a hard time finding stories of women who this happened to and especially after the surgery. This is really long but I hope it helps someone someday who might be going through the same thing. My OBGYN said she has seen it 1 time in residency and one case in practice since.

I had my Mirena put in at 11 weeks postpartum. There was a significant cramping associated but went away in an hour or two. It was a Tuesday. That Friday I had a lot of pain so I called the OB's office. They are only open a few hours on Fridays so I had to wait until the next Friday to be seen as I went back to work on that Monday and didn't want to take time off right away.

At this point the pain was intermittent but sharp when I did feel it. When I went back in to have it checked, the midwife (same one as inserted it) could not find the strings.

I went back a few days later for an ultrasound. The tech could not see it after looking for 20 minutes. Then I got sent for an X-ray and it was floating in my pelvis. The midwife called me back to tell me that it had perforated my uterus and I would have to have surgery.

Given that I had an emergency C-section three months ago, I was not thrilled to say the least. I had a pre-op consultation with my doctor and she explained that she would do a exploratory laparoscopy. She also recommended switching birth control methods to the pill or Nuvaring since I didn't want anything to do with an implant. I chose the pill.

I had my surgery yesterday and it went really well. The anticipation was the worst part and actually I had more pain from the failed IV (nurse blew the vein the first attempt so a doctor who happened to be standing there did the successful one).

The surgery lasted 75 minutes or so and in total we were at the hospital about 6 hours. I would have been discharged sooner but my blood pressure was low from dehydration so they kept me on the IV for a long time to push more fluids.

My doctor promised to clean up any scar tissue from my C-section while she was in there but after the surgery told my husband there was not any. She recommended I take a week off work because of the gas that was pumped into me causes discomfort and burping as it leaves.

I'm about 24 hours out from surgery and feeling really well. The pain is manageable and mostly I am tired. It was uncomfortable during the night when my medicine wore off but a quick pill swallow later and I went back to sleep. DH and my inlaws are doing all the kid care and chores for the next few days.
