@Adira: Now that I think about it, that might have been across 2 different appointments, but same thing! We were cleared and now LO can have any kind of nuts at 2 years old. Although she never went into anaphylactic shock with her allergies, her issues were more vomiting (before turning 1) and we had to do some scopes and what not an they found allergy cells in her esophagus. We still battle the cells but the symptoms have disappeared.

@HappyBaker: Thanks! That's actually how they did the skin prick test for the milk allergy, but it was just the one test. It was on his back, but I was just holding him against me and he fell asleep. But he was only 7 months at the time, so if they do something similar, that definitely won't work! Thanks for the tip about bringing something to distract him!!

Ours tested again, and her allergies went away. They first did the back scratch test and then for the ones they did a blood test to see how sever. Once they got those numbers back and ours were low enough they did an in the office test giving her different amounts every 15 minutes to watch her reaction (ours was peanut butter.)

We've only had one appointment (last year after a peanut butter reaction) - but they did a panel of skin pricks on her back. Basically we had to hold her so her back wasn't touching anything, they pricked her, then came back in like 20 minutes or so to see how things reacted.

I'd definitely bring an iPad or phone with something he can watch / be distracted with, otherwise it will be hard to get him to not touch his back / squirm around.

@Adira: Haha. Good plan! I'm usually always the bad guy. Though the blood draw thing DH had to help hold him down because the little guy is stronger than he looks! Though it could be us too... we weren't using all our strength because we were scared of hurting him.

@Raindrop: Ugh, no, I totally know. Although last time Xander had to had blood drawn, there was a nurse to hold his arm, which I was thankful for! And the time before that, I made Hubs be the bad guy and hold him (and then I comforted him after)!

@Adira: Oh yeah I'm old maybe a simple blood test is what they do now? :)

I think for my allergy test for college it was just a blood test.

Hopefully that is all it is. Though holding your LO down for a blood draw sucks! We had to do it for LO's 2 year appointment and he was not a happy camper. Luckily the blood place had some juice (very sweet juice) and gave it to him afterwards and he was okay after that.

You don't realize how thin your kid's arms are until you have to hold them down for getting a blood draw! :)

@Raindrop: Thanks!

I'm wondering if they will test Xander for other allergens or not. I think the allergist mentioned doing a blood test, but it was a year ago, so I don't really remember all the details of what he said.

*bumping*

I had allergies when I was little... I don't remember when I was 1.5 years old what happened. I believe my parents actually didn't catch that I had allergies till I was 4. I remember they did a big test on my back... lots of needles pricking my back... and I was so come back a day or week later to see how that area of my back reacted.

That was only once... then my follow up ones I got this weird block of needle pricks on one of my arms.... they were pretty close together with maybe like 30 small needles pricking a small square area of my arm and I was to come back.. the next day or a week to see how that worked out.

I think what's also weird about me... or maybe it's just a growing up thing... but my food allergies changed every few years but my outside allergies stayed the same.

The last time I tested was in college though.

When Xander was 7 months, I gave him some yogurt which immediately resulted in anaphylaxis and a trip to the ER. We met with an allergist to did a skin prick test to confirm that Xander's allergic to milk. We were then sent home with some info on milk allergies and told to follow-up in a year.

Well, it's been a year! Xander's allergist appointment is in November, and I'm just wondering what I should expect. Anyone have any experience they can share?
